Both of your problems (intelppm and the ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard) are covered in the following link:

http://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jesper/archive/2008/05/08/does-your-amd-based-computer-boot-after-installing-xp-sp3.aspx

Jesper has even included a small tool to download that will correct the intelppm problem. As for the mobo problem, you just need to plug in a USB flash drive when you boot the OS.

You've got two seperate issues causing the reboot problem!

Thanks Senor Bag,
After I did this the first time and got an endless looping of my boot cycle I am rather hesitant to try it again, in order to get me going again after the first fiasco, I had to reinstall the whole regisrty from the Windows CD, at least I got to keep my software. I have to believe MS will come up with an auto update to solve this issue. At least I hope so.

Here is the solution from Microsoft:
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...3&gprid=522131

The small tool that Jesper developed will stop the problem (intelppm) before it starts. The problem is too complex to discuss here in detail, but the fix is easy. Check out Jesper's Blog.

It was the the USB method, the thing that stopped the motherboard was my USB wireless mouse. ( Logitech) as soon as I disabled the intelppm.sys and connected a wired USB2 mouse it went smoothly. But I went though hell getting it to finally work. The motherboard problem is specific to the Asus A8N-32SliDeluxe Mobo.

The latest BIOS for this Mobo is Feb 06. I forget the V number. MS says they are aware of this and are trying to put together a patch for AMD based computers. They were totally unaware of this motherboard issue when I spoke to them, they were aware of the intel.ppm.sys issue though.

HP has just released an update for their AMD based PCs to install SP3. The endless looping problem solved.

There were many problems that were not related to HP computers, my computer is built by me, no oem at all, I even bought the WindowXP Pro disc. The endless looping was caused by the Intel.ppm file that is present on every copy of XP Pro, and it installs even on a system that does not have 1 Intel part in it.

Re: Windows xp sp3 thread

"UPGRADED" -- SP3 -- my HP PENTIUM 4 desktop but not without problems. A few weeks ago, I successfully upgraded my two laptops with no problem. I failed at boot time with the desktop (not an AMD). So I reverted back. Today I tried again. Found the problem. With my external WD 500Gb MY BOOK drive plugged into the firewire port, no boot. I unplugged it and I booted, plugged it back in (don't think the system recognized it) but then the system would not shut down. AAUUUUGH! Well, I unplugged it, rebooted, and changed the cord to a USB cord and now everything works fine using the USB port for the WD drive.

So, beware of an external WD MY BOOK drive in a firewire port if you "upgrade" to SP3. Too bad I had to use up a USB port to get it working.

Re: Windows xp sp3 thread

I'm not alone with 1394 (firewire) port, SP3, WD (and other) drive problems. (My problem exactly is described in one of the posts in the first link). No solution yet???

Re: Windows xp sp3 thread

Possible Solution? NO BOOT, 1394 port, external WD drive. I haven't tried it, but I will later.

"....The problem comes from sbp2port.sys, You have to revert to an older version(5.1.2600.2180). I found this version in the uninstall directory on my C drive. Just replace this version with the version SP3 installed and everything works now. I can restart my computer now with my firewire drive plugged in. I did this a few days ago and every thing seems to be working fine......"

Re: Windows xp sp3 thread

TRIED IT AND IT WORKS. System now boots normally with the drive in the 1394 port, shuts down and reboots ok also!! I overwrote the file in Windows/system32/drivers. :

Re: Windows xp sp3 thread

I did my update about four weeks ago. No problems encountered at all during the update at least not that I know of.
I wished I had known that if I was already on IE7 that I would not be able to roll back to IE6.

Don't know if I would have ever rolled it back anyway, but still would have liked the option to do it.

Same with Media player 11.

I hope someone comes up with a fix that will allow those of us that were unaware of this prior to be able to change or roll it back if we ever decided to.

there won't be a fix.
Uninstall SP3, roll back to IE6 and WMP9, reinstall SP3. Now you can do what you want with IE and WMP.

I haven't experience any meltdown or BSOD yet so far since going SP3 and I also have WMP11 and IE7, FF3 installed and no problems so far everything is smooth sailing. But I do PC maintance and reg cleaning as well and HDD defrag to keep my system running peak performance.
