Windows xp sp3 thread

I got the admin download 2 weeks ago, applied the sp3 to a very clean loading xp sp2 machine, smooth as glass no problems

I did the slipstream into the cab files from a xp /w sp2 disk with nlite
again no problems

Used it for 2 clean installs, only issue was opening IE it takes you to some live signup page, have to use msn link to get out of there

went to windows update, validated, no critical patches, other than IE7 and malisicous removal tool

anyone else with any experiences????????????????????????????????

No problems here either. I installed it on three computers and all have been working fine for about a week.

Re: Windows xp sp3 thread

There's some problems with IE6/7 in that SP3 still comes with IE6 where most people have upgraded to IE7 meanwhile. Installing SP3 on an existing system with IE7 will not allow an uninstall of IE7 (return to IE6), because that causes a clash between the original IE6 backup files on your system and the new IE6 files in SP3. If you want to be able to uninstall IE7 after upgrading to SP3, you must first revert to IE6 (uninstall IE7), then install SP3 and finally IE7 again.

Same applies to IE8 beta.

what I find interesting tho is a clean install ends up with a fully updated IE6 and all the security mvp's say IE6 is suicidal on the internet?

Re: Windows xp sp3 thread

I tried installing SP3 yesterday and ended up with a PC that wouldn't boot. Couldn't get into safe mode to remove it and also had to stop auto reboot in the Windows start up (F8) before I could read the blue screen problem. Switched to my Vista HDD and did a quick google and found this. Had to use the Windows repair console but it fixed the problem

rename \windows\system32\gdi32.dll gdi32.SP2

copy \windows\servicepackfiles\i386\gdi32.dll \windows\system32\gdi32.dll

Once I got into Windows I removed SP3 and will try again later when I do a fresh install.

If they installed IE7, they might break some Intranet Apps.

That is good news for me who didn't install it yet.

Does it install IE7? Because that messes up my scanner program.

Re: Windows xp sp3 thread

the update and clean install do a default of IE6

the update will leave IE7 alone if installed and possibly update it

Re: Windows xp sp3 thread

I'm not a big fan of post installation for Service Packs either.
I prefer integrated SP installation.

Finally completed and tested my customized Windows XP SP DVD.

Complete with the integration of all current drivers from DriverPacks.net, IE7, .NET Framework 1.1, 2.0 SP1, 3.0 SP1, 3.5, the latest DirectX 9.0c (March), Windows Media Player 11 with all Hot Fixes, integrated CD Key and tweaked preferences.

The tested installations went flawlessly.
I am now up to date.

Re: Windows xp sp3 thread

I did notice on problem after downloading the sp3.iso image and creating the cd. After I did the sp3 update for some odd reason my creative taskbar control now was set to 2.1 speaker rather then 5.1 speaker setting and it wouldn't allow me to change the setting after the update?? I have the audigy plat sound card with the live drive hardware.

Re: Windows xp sp3 thread

Download /and installation completed without any hangups.

Took a bit longer than I expected, even with high speed cable.

That could be because the download site was very busy.

Re: Windows xp sp3 thread

I did the install yesterday and in the middle of File Installation it quit and sign came up "Access Denied". I was not watching so I do not know what file caused the problem.
The update than reinstalled old version with warning that WinXP may have a problem running since all the files were not corrected.
So far it runs OK.

Re: Windows xp sp3 thread

Update I did a reboot of my working image before sp3 install and now all seems to be working fine got 5.1 sounds, volume control, device manager control back. Not sure what happened during those other install of SP3 but this time it seems to work out better. XP loads faster then before but only thing I have to let fully load up is ZA pro(without the firewall loaded up can't get to net or do other stuff on computer-that I can live with)that just seems to take longer. And I did disable Security Center from loading up that to me is just more memory waste.

You are probably better off ditching software firewalls and putting a router in line. Preferably one with SPI. Routers are plentiful and fairly cheap.

Fixed my problem.
Used Microsoft's Tool kit and their script to fix registry. SP3 installed without a hitch.

I find it better to have more protection then none. So, I have to decline your offer of just going with one protection line. And I do have router on my line more like ADSL2+ router bridge.

I have had exactly the opposite experience, the hardest computers to fix for me have been the ones where some very dangerous malware got by McAfee or TeaTimer and they hosed the computers, the same infection on an unprotected computer cleaned up easily without running a repair disk

I have had to reload several computers where they had no malware but resident protection conflicts hosed windows

The desktop security mvp's love hearing that stuff

Re: Windows xp sp3 thread

Just did a clean install on the laptop and the first thing I notice is the fast shutdown. Seems like XP got even better, Microsoft will be doing itself a big disservice by discontinuing it.
