Re: Windows Vista

It's not the proper time to judge the new OS I think. As madmax says, it's far from finished. Installing it might be nice for playing around, but I wouldn't recommend it for serious matters. It doesn't offer much good (yet) except for some visual changes, so there would be little point in wanting it anyway

Re: Windows Vista

Everything that was going to make Vista a new, intriguing, and worthwhile operating system... has been removed from the latest betas, and won't be in the release. As it exists, Vista is less compatible than XP64, slower than XP32, and has less features than Win2k. It's worthless as-is.

Yes, most "innovative" new features have been stripped indeed. Performance of the current versions isn't that interesting. We all know that early versions like this don't say anything about the actual performance of the upcoming retail version. It's likely that it'll be slower than XP. MS assumes newer hardware then when XP was released. That's not so strage eh?

No but much as people pick on MS, they usually add some stuff when an OS comes out, don't they? XP was slower on most hardware than Win2k, but it added a lot of eye candy and better DOS and Games support... as well as other improvements which have become apparent with time. It also ran 99.9999% of all software for Win9x and Win2k.

Vista won't run a lot of XP software. MS has already stated this. Additionally, it WILL run substantially slower, and MS is really worried about this. You can't just make a new OS that's slower and doesn't offer anything new. Nobody will buy it!

So they're in a bit of a quandry. They keep stripping stuff out, but the performance isn't improving in the way they'd like. Oops!
