Win 98 blue screens at boot on Win 98, CDVSD.VDX file???

Hi folks--this is my first post here.

I just built a new machine, with the following new components:

Asus P4B533-V motherboard
Antec 660 case with True Power 330 Watt PS
Crucial 2700 DDR ram (256 mb)
dual seagate barracuda drives
Lite-On LTD-163 DVD
Lite-On 40125S CDRW
Matrox G450 video card
Onboard audio (C-Media)
USR performance pro 56k modem

For reasons of my job, I am forced to stick with the original version of Windows 98, with all critical updates applied.

Things went ok for the first day or two--booted ok, no blue screens, excellent performance. I continued to install software such as PowerDVD, the C-Media driver, Nero, and InCD.

After those installations i started getting blue screens and error messages on most, but not all boots.

These errors were usually accompanied by lockups of one kind or another, inability to access DVD drive, inability to use mouse at all, etc. In some cases I could get by a couple of blue screens to a desktop. At other times I was forced to power off.

The error messages varied slightly, and usually referred to a CDVSD file, which is apparently a virtual device file needed for CD/DVD functioning. Here are a few examples:

An exception OE occurred at 0028:c1479443 in vxd cdrbsvsd (01) + 000007c3. This was called from 0028:c146dbad in vxdcdvsd (01) + 00000fbd. It may be possible to continue normally.

An exception OE has occurred at 0028: C146e9c3 in vxd cdvsd (01) at 00002183. This was called from 0028c146d7fd in vxd cdvsd (01) + 00000fbd. It may be possible to continue normally.

An exception OE has occurred at 0028:c146e9ca in vxd cdvsd (01) + 0000218a. this was called from 0028: c182a3cd in vxd voltrack (04) + 00000000. It may be possible to continue normally.

I removed Nero, InCD, C-Media Drivers, and PowerDVD. The errors continue.

A Microsoft knowledge base search reveals a somewhat similar problem at:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...EN-US;Q197004&

but it isn't the exact same error message and Microsoft apparently wants money to fix it.

Does anyone have suggestions? I may try to reinstall windows, but i am not inclined to simply start replacing brand new hardware randomly until the problem disappears.

thanks---

from my expiriences:
Quote:
1. windows act differently, installation by installation.
2. something stab/kill your cdvsd.vxd.
have you try boot in safe mode, or step by step confirmation?

suggestion:
if you try to re install windows, try from other partition using clean install, not re installing old installation

if this does not help, try disconect your hardware one by one, speccially ide devices

to create multiple primary partition:
Code:
Partition Manager (Part.exe)
        Create/delete many partition
        primary or Extended. (FreeWare)

Partition Resizer (Presizer.exe)
        Resize any FAT(s) partition
        and move any Non-FAT
        partition. (FreeWare)

They are Free, Easy to use, and simple yet Very Powerful
I hope this info may help.

Cdvsd.vxd is in windows/system/iosubsys check the version of this, possibly something you installed has overwritten this. If you have access to another pc with 98se copy and replace the file if necessary.

well i never did get this resolved. I found where the files lives in iosubsys. my version of the file is from sept 28 2000.

the good thing is that because of this issue, my employer has decided to upgrade all of us to XP, so i have installed XP and have experienced no problems with the DVD drive as yet.
