Re: Why You Should Dump Internet Explorer

Well I just went into another site not supported by Firefox. Why bother with frustration opening a site to find out it won't open with anything else but IE, I'll stay with it never had a complaint and still find it to be the best of the lot of them.

Re: Why You Should Dump Internet Explorer

Simple solution. I use both. You all act like you can't have two browsers installed on your computer. I can vouch for the fact that there is the occasional site that won't load properly in Firefox. Firefox is noticeably faster than IE and probably more secure, but I've also been using IE for years upon years and never ever had a security breach that my firewall or antivirus couldn't catch. As long as you're smart enough to know how to lock down your system and protect it from the outside world, aside from functionality differences, there's nothing to worry about.

I use both too. Unfortunately sometimes you have to use IE. My question is, having XP Pro, should I stick to IE6 or go for IE7?

Re: Why You Should Dump Internet Explorer

Why make this a problem ?
Download the IE tab extension from Mozilla and tell it what web sites you want opened in IE.
I only need 3, 2 for M$ and Movie Link for rentals.

Re: Why You Should Dump Internet Explorer

I think I.E. 7 is more secure than I.E. 6. For one thing, it's been split off from Windows Explorer. The only other difference I've seen is the menu bar isn't shown by default, but you can get it back with a couple of mouse clicks.

You also get a shortcut for running I.E. 7 without add-ons. I discovered the occasional problems I have with I.E. don't happen when I use it without add-ons. I haven't gotten around to figure out which add-on is the culprit, but I've found I don't need the add-ons anyway.

Re: Why You Should Dump Internet Explorer

I'm sticking with IE 6. I installed IE 7 and noticed a tremendous slow down in performance. It was pathetic....

But I also use firefox, and commend it over IE.

Re: Why You Should Dump Internet Explorer

I use Linux (Mandriva) & Windows XP, so I've tried many browsers on both sides of the fence. My favourite is Opera, with IE being a semi-close second, & Mozilla being third. I know Mozilla is now Seamonkey, but I still prefer the old Moz. As for Firefox, i was never impressed with that from the get go. Slow, clunky, not pretty at all unless you take the time to find a usable skin, takes a while to manually configure properly. Basically I always thought it was a dog, & I still do. Just my 2 pennies.

I did come across a very interesting website debunking the many myths about Firefox, in a fair & well documented manner. For those interested, it's HERE. Give it a read if you find the time, it's quite informative.

Not good, it's just a shell for IE.

Same thing here for OS's and Opera, but I avoid IE completely. It's true that Firefox isn't that good, but I use it only for ogame and for Google Pages (which can't open with opera )

Opera rules!!!

It does now!!! I just checked, I use Opera 9.20 and it can open Google Pages...
Now, I only use firefox because of its foxgame add-on for ogame. If someone make this for Opera, then I will completely dump FF as I did IE!

Re: Why You Should Dump Internet Explorer

I have tried Opera, Mozilla, Firefox, IE, Explorer, and Netscape. I have been using Firefox for three years and with my slow dial up connection, it is the fastest one and the most customizable. I.E. 7 is a mimic of Firefox, but still not as good to me. I use a third party Firewall and Virus Scan and never have seen a pop up ad or had a problem with viruses.

Can you specify exactly why IE 7 is not as good as Firefox?

How can you be sure FF is faster than IE when you are on "dial-up" connection? Perhaps you have invested far more time on optimizing FF than IE. With a security product package like Norton IS and V3 IS, it is very difficult to see any pop-up or have a problem with virus regardless of web browser as long as everything is very up-to-date.

Re: Why You Should Dump Internet Explorer

Gave Safari for WinXP a quick try. A rotten Apple. Has the same display problems (overlapping fonts) as Firefox. And the fonts constantly need to be sized up or down--very distracting. Opera is better at displaying, but has other niggling glitches. I will stick with IE6, which displays the home pages of the other browsers even better than they do.....

Re: Why You Should Dump Internet Explorer

I think that we all have different experiances with each browser and will profer once from the other depending on the way you work and use them.

A Debate on wheather FF or IE is better will go on for years.

My personal experiances with the two are when i was using XP i had IE6 and FF installed and found that FF had better features like taps ect but was slower, once IE7 came out i found the fectures out ran FF for me and liked the whole new IE7 UI even if it was confussing to use at first. now i have Vista i havn't even missed FF and havn't installed it yet probley wont unless a new verison comes out.

Re: Why You Should Dump Internet Explorer

over all i do like firefox better. the only major (yes major) down fall is that most of the world uses windows. therefore most of the world programs there websites to use IE.

my kids like to go to different websites to play games, i find on limited user accounts FF actually works better sometimes and IE is better sometimes. depends on what type of add-ons need to be loaded. for instance the Virtools 3D Life Player needed for nickjr.com works fine for both, but sometimes the Flash Player has trouble in IE and not FF.

this really doesnt effect me too much as i will use FF and find work arounds. (kinda fun right) for it is faster IMO. although i have edited the about:config.

Re: Why You Should Dump Internet Explorer

The link provided was an article from 2004. Back then, most people were still using IE 5. Most of his arguments are not applicable with todays browsers. I myself use Mozilla's Firefox as my main browser, which is indeed much more user-friendly than Microsoft's aging resurrections of it's Internet browsers.

I have used Opera as well, and I must admit, it's a hell of a browser. It comes with anything you would need for your daily surfing need. Eg. Torrent extentions built it, download manager, widgets etc. My only problem with it is that is is simple a clunky browser visually. I know it uses less resources than Firefox, but Mozilla's variant is more appealing, and easier to use.

Re: Why You Should Dump Internet Explorer

All the discussion of browsers I've heard comes down to Firefox and Safari. IE is never even in the running when such conversations come up.
Like customization? How about add-ons? Firefox.

And those who say Firefox loads "slower" than IE, it may seem so. I know what you're talking about. IE may show up a bit quicker than Fox, but it loads gradually. Where as Firefox may take a hair second slow to come up, but it comes up all at once - and loads much better.
Not to mention Fox makes it so damn easy to get missing plug-ins you need. No hunting down the plug-in you have no idea about - Fox gives you a window.
