| Thats not acurate. both Home and Pro can be purchased as full installs or upgrades. Both home and pro require a cd key and activation unless you have a corperate version. XP Home Upgrade can only upgrade over 9x while Pro can upgrade over NT 2000... Home defaults to a FAT 32 install while pro defaults to NTFS. XP Pro supports multi processors and comes with IIS XP home can only support one processor and although it can log on to a domain, it can not be managed like pro can policies ect ect... | home is a pointless waste of time go for corporate, as it does not have the product activation **** in it. And if you have a partition >30GB i surgest you format it to NTFS, FAT32 iritates me, perticularly the 2GB file size limit. Its quite funny actually, when you copy a file larger than 2GB to a fat32 partition, it comes out with a negative size ![]() |

One thing I know different between home edition and pro edition is network support (should I say network ability?). Home edition does not allow you to access network through domain - that means you cannot access or share in the office or school where LAN has been set. I am pretty sure there are a lot of people know more than me about XP, I have used just once and did not like it and still do not.

| Ugly duck, I dont think nb was saying that fat 32 had a 2gb partition limit. He was talking about issues with files larger than 2GB. Microsoft says... You can use Windows XP Home Edition to connect to resources in a domain, either on the local network, or via a Remote Access Services (RAS) or virtual private network (VPN) connection; however, with Windows XP Home Edition, you cannot: Be joined to and managed by the domain This means any logon scripts, group policies, or software distribution by the network administrator over the network will not happen on your computer. With Windows XP Professional, you can easily join and be managed by the domain. Enter your domain credentials a single time This means any time you connect to a file, printer share, e-mail account, Web page, etc., you will have to enter your logon and password. However, if you connect to the network via RAS, you will only have to enter your credentials once. With Windows XP Professional, no matter how you connect to your domain-based network, you will only have to enter your credentials once. Use advanced security features Security features such as IP Security (IPSec) and digital certificates may be required in some environments to access certain resources. These features are built into Windows XP Professional. There are coreperate versions of both HOME and PRO. When upgrading to the Microsoft Windows XP operating system, you have a choice between Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home Edition. Windows XP Professional contains all the features of Windows XP Home Edition, plus extra features for business and advanced home computing. Is Windows XP Professional the best choice? Ask yourself these five questions to find out which one is right for you: Do you want to remotely access your computer so you can work with all your data and applications while away from your desk? Remote Desktop, a feature found only in Windows XP Professional, lets you set up your computer for connection from any other Windows-based computer. Leave a file at home? Don't want to lug a laptop around? Remote Desktop gives you access to your computer from virtually anywhere. More about Remote Desktop. Do you connect to a large network? Windows XP Professional is best for people who connect to large networks, such as a school or office network, since it allows you to join and be managed by a Windows domain. More about joining networks. Do you need to protect sensitive data in files and folders that are stored on your computer? The Encrypting File System (EFS), found in Windows XP Professional but not Windows XP Home Edition, allows you to encrypt your files and folders for added security of sensitive data against theft or hackers. Restricted File Access, also found only in Professional, allows you to restrict access to selected files, applications, and other resources. More about EFS. Do you need the ability to completely restore your system in the event of a catastrophic failure? Windows XP Professional provides more robust options for backing up and restoring data than Home Edition. More about System Restore and other restore options. Would you consider yourself a "power user"? Windows XP Professional contains a number of incremental features too numerous to list here. Suffice it to say, users who demand the most from their computers will want to "go Pro." Some additional features found only in Windows XP Professional are: Support for multiple-processor systems Support for multiple languages Advanced networking for multiple PC environments If you answered "yes" to one or more of the questions above, Windows XP Professional is the right operating system for you. | Cheers! ntloser.... Thank you for clear explanation for Win XP series... I just wonder why Microsoft did that, What is main point to remove some functions from Home edition? One of my friend bought a laptop (Win XP home edition pre installed) and could not use a laptop what he would have like to use, and we found out that Home edtion would not support those things as you mentioned (could not join the domain...) Is Microsoft just too helpful for some begginers or just raise some furtune? |

| Oh and there are also the "hacked" versions. There were alot of these floating around on Usenet and other places that didn't require activation or a product key. Most of them contained a hacked Winlogon and built in trojan horse programs. |

| Wiz, I wasn't trying to say that you had a hacked version. If you got your XP at a respectable dealer then more than likely it is not "hacked". If your windows XP Pro does not require activation, it is the corperate version. |

| I am not trying to condone piracy but it is public knowledge that a XP key generator has been released and is readily available on the Internet. This being said there is really no reason to be using a "copy" of XP that may be "unsafe" |

) on your legit copy of Win XP? Or Office XP either? That way you can still have it on your Desktop & laptop as in days gone by upto Win Me. Uncle Bill don't want that of course, but are you really going to go out and buy Office XP Pro for £550 and then buy another for your laptop? Yeah right! Of course, I am not encouraging anybody to carry this out as it would break the "M$ end user agreement" which perrish the thought none of us would ever do. ![]()

| Lazza, I stumbled on to this accidentally. I don't know if the license allows for this but I had several legit copies of Office XP Pro pass through my hands and sure enough each would install and activate on two computers but as soon as it was installed on a third one the activation failed. |
