Want to speed up your Firefox browser???

heres one way......*and no Tax ..its not illegal..*

1. Type "about_:config" (drop the _ out of this line. For some reason the forum is adding the _ to about_:config?) into the address bar and hit return. Scroll
down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time.
When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really
speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This
means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Last, right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer.
Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0".
This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

If you're using a brodband connection this can load pages 2-3 times faster now

Re: Want to speed up your Firefox browser???

did the new integer setting yesterday...noticed some speed up.

you can set some of the values higher than that (depending on your net connection) with even better results.

alternately, you can DL this FF extension and have it perform most of those settings automatically: https://addons.update.mozilla.org/ex...Windows&id=327

Re: Want to speed up your Firefox browser???

Heres the best way to speed up Firefox in 15 easy steps. It works perfectly for me and I've never had Firefox slow down on me since I followed this method.

1. Go here
2. Tick to download with java
3. Select a mirror closest to your location
4. Click download and wait until finished

5. Click Start
6. Click Settings
7. Click Control Panel
8. Click Add/Remove Programs
9. Remove Firefox
10. Close Add/Remove Programs

11. Double click the downloaded file
12. Follow the prompts
13. Click finish
14. Run Opera (if not already running)
15. Enjoy the fastest browser on earth

Seriously though, use whatever browser you feel comfortable/familiar with and thanks everyone for the tips.

Re: Want to speed up your Firefox browser???

nothing to do with FF whatsoever..why bother posting in the thread.

btw, isn't Opera a "pay-for" browser whereas FF is entirely FREE and open source?

I draw your attention to the above quote. A bigsmile indicating fun, and then a following thankyou for the tips.

If the original thread starter (in this case Sexy_Southerner) has a problem with my post, then I will edit it.

Yes, enabling HTTP pipelining can dramatically improve networking performance. The downside, and the reason it's not enabled by default, is that it can prevent Web pages from displaying correctly.

Feel free to experiment, but remember that most of the defaults are defaults for a reason. If your browser starts misbehaving or web sites look broken, it might be worth going back to default settings.

Re: Want to speed up your Firefox browser???

you install it same as any other extension, double-click it. the differernce from other extensions is that it it actually shows up directly under the "Tools" menu as "Tweak Network Settings".

If you need extra help, then have a look here. Point 4. is regarding installing extensions. (scroll down a bit)

To install an extension from this page, click on the install link. When the installation is complete, restart the browser (all opened windows!). After that, the instructions are different depending on the installed extension. Some extensions add a toolbar button, which requires you to manually add that button by choosing View > Toolbars > Customize... from the menu and then drag-and-drop the button on your toolbar. Other extensions add new settings to the Options window. Select Tools > Options... > Extensions, select the extension and then click Settings to access that window.

Re: Want to speed up your Firefox browser???

I don't mean to rain on your parade, SS... but I've seen this posted on a number of forums now, and I'm a little concerned about the flow-on effects of this tweaking of Firefox.

It works by increasing the number of simultaneous connections made to a Web server to download a page, in much the same way download accelerators like Getright make multiple connections to a server to download more chunks of a file simultaneously. This is great for the user, but not so wonderful for the server.

As more people take these tweaks on board, especially in communities such as this, the servers will start being hammered more and more, and one or both of two things will happen: the effectiveness of the tweak will diminish, because there's only so much bandwidth to go around, and it may have unpredictable effects on the less stable Web servers out there. As more people are hammering servers, and taking all the bandwidth, more people will miss out and not enjoy the same quality of service from a particular server.

I can also see that changes will be made by Webmasters very soon to strictly limit the number of simultaneous connections per IP. My advice, not so much from a technical standpoint as from an ethical, would be to not modify Firefox's settings unless you are experiencing service degradation (in comparison with say IE.)

Re: Want to speed up your Firefox browser???

not sure i see where ethics are involved at all with tweaking your browser settings. if a web server isn't stable or can't accomodate increased traffic, it's up to the responsible party to see that's fixed. net traffic is only increasing and NOT tweaking your settings would have a negligble effect on anything IMHO.
