General Software Discuss, Program for old games? at International Chat: Software related forum; I recall there being a post that spoke of a program that would allow you to play old windows 95/98 games on a Windows 2000 NTFS system. Anyone heard of this ?

I second that....

The backwards compatibilty was one of Microsoft's biggest marketing points for XP. Why? As they wanted to show that XP can work very well together with older applications (as many companies still used old apps and rely on those).

to get compatability mode in w2k (must have sp2 or later) goto start > run > type this in (without the quotes) "regsvr32 %systemroot%\apppatch\slayerui.dll" you will get a message box pop up saying slayer.dll successfully loaded now you will have compatability mode like in xp

Filesystem should not matter
http://www.ntcompatible.com/faq-15.html

There is an app on the NT4 cd called setwin95.cmd and IMAGECFG.EXE that would allow older games to be played in 2000. I used it on Heavy Gear 2 and Grim Fandango back in the day

Also, check the above site "compatibility" list to see what others have done to get a specific game working

Forget about VMWare... I had the idea to make a vpc and put all my old DOS games in that (that would make the dos games playable both in Windows and Linux) but it simply doesn't work out. Even commander Keen 4 doesn't run smoothly (and that's a 16 color game (EGA))! And ofcourse.. no sound.

Maybe Connectix/Microsoft virtual PC 2004 can help out (though I doubt it)...

Re: Program for old games?

Hi guys, I'm having troubles running Grim fandango on my computer using Windows 2000. when Manny is talking the sound often loops and it kind of freeze the game. Also when I press F1 to save my game, there is no more sound at all when i go back to the game. it really sucks. I have to quit the game and reload it all.
here's what I tried: i downloaded and installed the patch on lucasarts' site but it doesn't help. I installed the VDMsound2.1.0 program, but it still doesn't help much.
my sound card is a sound blaster live! value. and my video card is a ATI all in wonder 9800 series.

I read stuff about disable hyperthreading options, and win95 compatibility mode stuff, but since I use win 2000 I don't think these things can help... yet I didn't find anything in my BIOS about hyper threading so this means it isn't enabled, eh! so anyways i really wish i could play Grim again but the sound keeps on looping and freezing everything....
Can anyone help ? thanks a lot...

Sonia

Re: Program for old games?

Getting old Windows games to run at least is a pain, some will work quite well while others wont. The best way is to either get an old computer running Win95/98 or install it on your current one and dual boot and cross your fingers that Windows accepts your hardware. As some mentioned earlier Dosbox and VMWare/VirtualPC etc are other solutions if you don't want to mess around with dual boot. Regarding compatibility with old games I can't honestly say that I've noticed any difference between Win2K and XP. The compatibility feature in Windows wont help in most cases.

Re: Program for old games?

The compatiblity feature only reports a different windows version to the application so it will only help if your application or game checks windows version.
