| Microsoft Relents on Retail Vista Install Restrictions! Good for Vista fans. Microsoft had said they were going to limit the ability of folks to re-install Retail versions of Vista to ONE "transfer", either to another physical machine or a machine that has had one of the main components changed, such as the boot hard drive, the CPU, motherboard, vid card, etc. (it was never specifically said what would trigger a "transfer" in the same system) After a bunch of angry feedback from Enthusiasts (those who spend THOUSANDS on a system swapping out parts, optimizing, etc.) MS caved and said they would remove that restriction, pretty much simply stating that you could only have it installed on a single machine at a time, which seems quite reasonable. Even though I have no plans to go to Vista until I'm forced to by Microsoft abandoning XP, I think this has got to be a good thing for Vista users. Now, if we can only find out how the OEM version will be affected. After all, folks who buy Voodoo or Alienware or FalconNW rigs will get OEM versions of Vista, and they will want to be tweaking and swapping out parts like crazy and move the software from one rig to another. I hope they get the same policy. |

| Re: Microsoft Relents on Retail Vista Install Restrictions! Good for Vista fans. I have switched back to Win 2000 on one of my machines just because it does not constantly bother me with XP validation. Just today, I changed out some nVidia drivers and that alone was enough to trigger another activation even though I just activated it 2 months ago (third time). No hard ware changes at all during that time frame. If they had actually implimented such a policy as was indicated above, I would never upgrade.

As far as I'm concerned, Apache and the WWW Consortium and NETSCAPE did far more for the internet than anything Microsoft could have possibly hoped to do. Java, Pearl, CGI, PHP - none of that had Microsoft written all over it. | |
