You can't live with it, you can't live without it either

Evidently older versions have more holes than windows xp

to correctly update you have to go into add and remove programs and uninstall any old java there

reboot

then go to this page

http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6

it's halfway down the page

chose the offline installer

pass on the sun download manager

jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe

Re: Java updates

I guess I do mine backwards, because I install the new one & then go to Add/Remove to get rid off the old one. I still remember when I first started, I noticed about three Javas in my Add/Remove, so rookie that I was, (still am), I contacted them & asked if it was safe to remove the older versions. The answer back was basically, we are not sure, but why don't you try it & let us know.

BTW I found a good program that will alert me of things like Java being insecure & an update being there. It's called Secunia, they have an online version, but I installed the PSI (Personal Software Inspector). Like anything though, make sure you read what it's telling you & if in doubt, GOOGLE & research.

Re: Java updates

I just follow the standard direction given in all the "approved" security forums

java based or injected infections are not pretty

Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 is clearly offered on the Sun website for download. They usually do not publicize new releases.

http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

It should be the 5th selection down the page.

even with no script protecting you, you go to a "trusted" site and allow scripts and then wham!

how were you to know that the site was injected with a maliscous java based code?

every layer of protection needs another layer just in case
