Re: IE .reg file to STOP SPYWARE COOKIES

Thanks for the reply bcn_246. Overwriting what I already have would be a problem - I have entries in there already, most likely populated from various protection applications I run. Guess I need to do a manual cross-check to see if everything already there is also in this reg file.... unless someone knows of an easier way.

Yes, and feel free to post here anything you find. I do not think I will update it much anymore, if at all, as I have little time as of lately and my priorities have changed.

It's a great starting point for anyone, as it has an overwhelming amount of entries already, and can be updated individually for anyone who uses it, as well as customized in its current state on a per user setting.

Re: IE .reg file to STOP SPYWARE COOKIES

Just thought I'd let everyone know that there is a little utility within Spybot which allows viewing of the HOSTS file. It also has a function to add Spybot's own list to the HOSTS file or remove Spybot's list, as well as a backup function.

Spybot's list is quite large, although I didn't try to count it!

This utility is listed under the "Tools" section (You have to be in "Advanced" mode). There are some other good tools there, too, including a function to change the IE title bar text, & a function to view & change the search pages (some spyware change these).

This doesn't seem to work in Firefox with a proxy enabled. I wonder if this is a bug or something?

Use the Hosts file.

Just stick it in your windows/system32/drivers/etc folder

You can also open it in notepad, if you want to get kinky. Any existing lines in the hosts file can simply be copied & pasted to the new one, or the other way around

You will need to restart your computer for it to have any effect.

The hosts file just redirects certain domains to a particular IP address so your PC doesn't need to use a DNS to look up the IP address.

127.0.0.1 is your computers loop-back address, so changing a server which hosts cookies or annoying content to 127.0.0.1 will basically send all traffic to that domain back to you computer, hence blocks it

example from windows host file

102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com
127.0.0.1 ads.suckers.com

Requests to rhino.acme.com will be sent immediately to the server, bypassing the DNS, hence saving time.

Requests to ads.suckers.com will be sent back to your computer, hence saving time looking it up & also saving time downloading any other crap they like loading your computer with because your computers request never reaches it

Re: IE .reg file to STOP SPYWARE COOKIES

I guess I should have been more specific. I am using the host file to blacklist these domains. I did try rebooting and confirmed the entries are in the host file.

I think its a limitation in how the proxy works. Without the proxy server set, both IE and Firefox work how it should with the host file, can't connect to these sites (as intended). However, with the proxy server set on IE and Firefox, it does not check the host file and loads these sites as normal.

Can anyway else confirm this? Would there be a workaround for this besides adding the entries to the proxy? Yes you could add them to the proxy...but not if you don't have administration on the proxy server.

Re: IE .reg file to STOP SPYWARE COOKIES

well thanks for the info and stuff... but dont the program "Spywareblaster" do this to? ( i know it's primary use it for activex blocking, but i think it does have stuff to block tracking cookies to)

either way i dont use IE6 anymore... firefox i think is just better and more secure on the whole.

Is there a way to "undo" the .reg file if someone doesn't like it?

Yes, SpywareBlaster blocks links and tracking cookies in both IE and Firefox and they update the list regularly.

It seems the domain the reg file is in/was in has expired.

Re: IE .reg file to STOP SPYWARE COOKIES

Heres the two important files, the other files I never kept.
It will be available for as long as is needed depending on how much bandwidth is used.

IE .reg file (right-click "save target as")
Hosts File Addition (right-click "save target as")

Hope this helps.

[edit]
for some reason, the regfile comes up as IElist.mp3, so just rename it to IElist.reg.
If it happens to you, sorry about that.

Here a HOSTS+IE file with all entries from HOSTS.txt + ALL SPYBOT SEARCH & DESTROY entries. The "hosts.exe" will automatically overwrite current hosts file. Enjoy EVERYONE.

Re: IE .reg file to STOP SPYWARE COOKIES

G'day
I Googled for: IE .reg file and I found this They show it as malware. I Googled for IElist.reg and IElist.mp3 and I get reffered back to this forum.
Since you never got an answer I dont think it (the file) exists.
I use the Hosts file. You can download from Here This file is updated frequently so keep the link handy and check regularly for updates.

Re: IE .reg file to STOP SPYWARE COOKIES

Not to sound like a wet blanket, but Firefox and Opera (now free) have some great blockers as well. Consider switching?

Re: IE .reg file to STOP SPYWARE COOKIES

All, the .reg file I created is to stop unwanted well known spyware related cookies. It does not stop/prevent spyware such as installing software of spyware. It also does not stop all ads, but does stop about half. Also it does not act as a popupblocker.

It is for IE only.

Hope that clarifies it some.

Here's the IE .reg file all zipped up and here's the text file you add to your hosts file as described in the first post.
