Re: IE .reg file to STOP SPYWARE COOKIES

Did some general testing today on page load times.
Used a web page alreadey mentioned here: www.xtra.co.nz

Blocking cookies loaded it in 6.6 of a second

Not blocking cookies loaded it in 36.6 of a second (1/3 sec)

I am using netmedic for all testing.

I would say thats quite a difference in time, for the dial up 56'ker, its a bit of a drag, for the avg broadband user, no noticeable lag, but the delay is there.

I plan to test more sites once I have time, if you want your site tested, list it, I will test it each way. This is acually turning out to be lotz of fun for me!!!

Re: IE .reg file to STOP SPYWARE COOKIES

Cool, glad to see it helps others out as well.

I hope to get more faster projected load time results when I have more time to test web pages. Its quite annoying to remove all entries, visit the web page, log the result, then incorporate the .reg file and test again with the same site.

BTW, Whats the SE in ad-aware stand for?

Re: IE .reg file to STOP SPYWARE COOKIES

Tools and Utilities related to hosts file
hey guyz, thought i would post some tools i found on the internet to do with the hosts file.
=================
HostsToggle

Homepage: http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/HostsToggle/
Open-source Freeware: Download here!
Current Version: 2.1 released May 31, 2002
Requires:VB6 runtime files for Win9x/NT4 (not neccessary for Win ME/2K/XP)
Author: Mike Meyer

The Hosts file can be useful for blocking ads, but sometimes it can also interfere with normal web browsing and downloading. It has been a hassle to temporarily rename the Hosts file so that you could visit those troublesome sites or to switch to a less-restrictive Hosts setting. Until now.

HostsToggle makes turning the Hosts file "on" and "off" as easy as clicking a button. The Hosts file can also be automatically restored after a specified amount of time--great if you keep forgetting to turn the Hosts back on! And finally, you can easily load alternate Hosts files (saved with the extension .tgl) so that instead of completely turning off the Hosts file, you can load one without the entries that are causing you trouble.

HostsToggle comes with the Visual Basic 6 source code so you can see exactly what it's doing. You are free to modify the code to suit your needs. HostsToggle may also be freely distributed for non-profit. If you distribute a modified version of HostsToggle, you must include the modified source code.

==============================

Host File Checker 2.2

Homepage, Download and more information

Info: Search through your system's host file and remove duplicate entries. Your host file allows you to block sites of your choice by IP or name. In version 2.2, you now have the ability to add, change, and delete entries, as well as the ability to remove all duplicate entries found in the Windows host file. If any mistakes are made while editing the Windows host file, HFC 2.2 has the ability to undo your last mistake.

=============================

Website containing small files which modify hosts files:

============

eDexter

Website: Homepage
Download:Download
Info: eDexter is a program that acts as a local-only (it is not accessible throught the Internet) HTTP server on your computer. It is used to replace the empty boxes that occur when you use the Hosts file to block ads. eDexter will put one of its own images into the box that would have been occupied by the advertisement. This way, you will not have large, empty boxes in your browser and will instead have an image where the box used to be.

Re: IE .reg file to STOP SPYWARE COOKIES

@fernandose

nice find... will this software help people manage the list I provided of entries to list in the HOSTS file?

BTW, using my instructions, one can easily manage the HOSTS file because now they would know how to navigate into it, open it, and simply see if anything was added that doesn't belong there

Re: IE .reg file to STOP SPYWARE COOKIES

the proxomitron will remove almost any unwanted stuff from webpages. and it is very simple to customize once you get into it.

Ever tried copletely disabling cookies? most sites just use them for convieniance and they are not really required. And in mozilla (not firefox (!)) you can limit max time a cookie is stored. So it doesn't stay for 40 years (amazon.com)

Convieniance is of essence when you have log-ins on many different web sites and want to be remembered via cookie.

I never tried the software you suggested.
Have you tried the .reg file yet?

Whoa that reg file rocks!

Hey man after 2 days of browsing still no tracking cookies. I've been all over the place too, places where I usually get hosed with bunches of crap. It did speed up browsing quite a bit too, not that cookies are that big but after a couple days I usually have 20 or more. I don't think that it's so much the cookies downloading but the information they normally traffic that results in the slowdown. Between the hosts file, the firewall, and the reg file I haven't had any popups or spyware in a while. The only thing that sucks about this some sites spend more time trying to sneak some popups through than loading the site. I hate that, you know that's the case because when you allow popups the site loads quick, but you get hosed. When you block the popups it starts a port scan and sits there looking for a way to hose you with crap first. Sites like that piss me off. If I spot anything that needs to be added should I post it here?

Yes please do, I wlecome all contributions, although I don't expect too many cause after having near 2000 on the list already, the rest will come one in a few here and there, maybe add a total of between 5-10 things to the list yearly.

I suspected and proved it would help get a speed boost, as well as some others here have seen it too.

About the popups, I use a deadly combination of a HOSTS file, .reg file for IE, and popupcop. I have been ad-aware and spybot clean from the time I started this project. Its so nice to never have to worry again.

Thanks for trying it, and do report anything you find here!!!

Re: IE .reg file to STOP SPYWARE COOKIES

Yes, a lot of work for me initially, but not for others who can simply download and benefit from my work, nor is it a lot fo work once its all set up.

I think its more work running ad-aware and spy-bot weekly. I honestly think I can never run it again, or maybe tri-monthly now.

I do recomend proxomitron. I can not use the reg file since I don't use IE for browsing However using HOSTS file works like a charm

Re: IE .reg file to STOP SPYWARE COOKIES

Great site - been lurking for a long time, but never posted a question.

Does this modification to the registry replace values that might already be present, or does it append?

If append, safe to assume it does not recognize identical entries that might already be present?
