All was fine for a while...Could Write on DVD+RW via InCD, and burn DVD-Rs with Nero 6. I was happy!!! For some reason though things changed. One day I decided I wanted to view some of my old files -".avi" mostly- and I inserted a burned DVD-R. Funny thing is , the drive didn't load it, it's like it couldn't recognize that a DVD was inserted...I could hear the drive try to load once but after a while it stopped trying. So I tried to see what's going on manually through "My Computer". When I double clicked on the drive Windows explorer freezed. I had to Eject in order for it to resume to normal. Weird!!! I made several attempts with the same and other DVD-Rs but only few seemed to be recognized by the driver. Same thing with my DVD+RW. Have Windows XP Professional SP2. This never had happened before to me so the experience is kinda new...Don't know what to do. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Might be a problem with the media (discs) you're using. For the most part of my own experience, LG drives aren't the most tolerant readers if the media isn't perfect.

What's the brand of discs you're having problems with?

If you can find someone with a recent Samsung drive, or a LiteOn, they maight be able to read the discs.

Thanks for replying first of all. Thing is I never had these problems up till now. Everything was perfect. I've been using my drive for more than 6 months. It's kinda weird that the hardware would get "picky" of the quality I feed it with after a certain amount of time. Besides I think I have good quality (TDK DVD+RW and SONY DVD-R) and I keep them safe... No scratches whatsoever...Hmmmm...I just find it occured. Thing is I have backed up all my files on the same type of DVD-Rs, that is SONY, and if you say that LG has a problem with that...than I've wasted so much time for nothing. LOL. Anyway, I would really appreciate it if you could come up with some more info about this, because I need to know before something like this happens again to me.

Yeah, the Sony ones should be fine, not too sure about the TDK as I haven't used them.

One thing that *might* be causing it, is the presence of InCD. It has been known to cause problems. So you might try uninstalling it just to see what happens.

If uninstalling InCD doesn't do the trick, is there a possibility that you can try the discs on another drive?

PS. Forgot to mention one important thing...This not only happens to my LG driver but also it appears to apply on my other drive which is SONY DVD-ROM DDU1621. If this info helps out at all please respond. Thanks again in advance

It could be that InCD is trying to access the disc, and trying to access it at the same time with Explorer is what might be causing things to freeze up.

Luckily you have an LG drive, so you could use DVD-RAM for drag & drop writing through Explorer...trouble is, it's a bit on the slow side unless you're lucky enough to find the 12x discs!

There are some that find Roxio better for drag & drop burning than InCD - at least, it doesn't appear to cause as many problems.

Bad news I uninstalled and there seems to be the same problem ...Are you sure that there couldn't be something else besides InCD that affects the drives?

A little more info.... Same thing happens with blank DVD-Rs!?!?! Don't know if that gives out a clue. Hope it does though

Edit: OK, everything looks OK at first glance.

Except, DMA is apparently off on your Sony.

It looks like both the Sony and the LG are connected to one of your Primary IDE channels.

Uninstall that channel in Device Manager (be careful not to delete the one with your HDD on it!), reboot, then see if DMA is properly enabled

There's a link in my sig about enabling/checking DMA to help you.

Very strange.

When you go to Device Manager -> IDE/ATAPI Controllers -> Primary IDE channel (the one with your DVD drives on it) -> Advanced Settings, what are the Current Transfer Modes for the drives?

Unless someone else has any ideas, my next thought is to replace the IDE cable.

Can you try the drive in another pc and see if it works in it?

I think rolling's idea is the best one to try - it would certainly clear some stuff up.

Failing that, although Sony discs are usually fine, it's either bad burn or bad media.

Assuming, that is, the drives read factory-pressed discs OK.
