P.S.
I have a spanky new fresh copy of windows installation, no codecs installed, nothing. Only installed Nero first before anything.
The default installation of the K-Lite MEGA codec pack is pretty sufficient. Just remove the BullShit Player and use Winamp, Real Media Player Classic or Quicktime Player Classic for your viewing pleasures.

Handy procedure for making your super duper XP distro:

Step a: (the xp install you want)

Fire up nLite
Get rid of all the stuff you don't want
Implement every applicable security update and service packs
Implement latest drivers of your system (vga, sound, etc)
Make a nice bootable iso and install it

Step b: (installing and customizing xp)
Customize your desktop, energy savings and all other stuff
Install nero, codec pack, handy programs etc
Install all applicable security updates and other stuff you want
Reboot at least two times

Step c: (the backup)
Grab drive snapshot.
(Yes, it's shareware, but you don't need to register. You will make an image of your drive once and will always be able to restore it).
Make nice image
Burn image and snapshot.exe on cd or dvd. (If cd, make it bootable as well)

Re: Help with Codec Packs....

Okay I guess nero doesn't like this .mp4 video. Maybe if anyone of you guys have time an run the video located here http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/so...w/M4V00020.MP4 through nero's create your own dvd and notice that in the preview, it is in slow motion and causes nero to crash. Also winavi is saying that it doesn't have mpeg\dvd codec, yet I installed everything from the previous recommendation.

Re: Help with Codec Packs....

Update: If I change the .mp4 to avi first then run it through Nero, it works, not to mention, I get the Nero can't encode MPEG 4 video though, but I click okay and it runs. The preview even works great, no slowdown, and it encodes fine. The winavi still says the MPEG\DVD codec missing, though you click okay three times and it encodes anyways. Oh well, they work, and that is all that matters.

Re: Help with Codec Packs....

I had to install two files into the winavi converter called cluad.ax and clvsd.ax to be able to use the mpg\dvd function correctly. I think the k-lite didn't install those codecs correctly or something. Winavi is the only program that has asked for this two files to work fine, but I don't know if others will encode well not using this two files. Anyways, does anyone know what files I can search for to see if the mpg\dvd files were installed with k-lite mega pack because maybe they aren't sufficient and it is recommended to include a dvd encoder like PowerDVD or CyberDVD codecs.

Re: Help with Codec Packs....

Installing codec packs is generally a bad idea. Usually having ffdshow is enough for decoding 90% of the time, when you get a file that you can't play you just find the relevant codec, installing codecs you don't need is a great way to bloat your system and cause conflicts unnecessarily. For encoding, again just get the codecs you want to use.

Re: Help with Codec Packs....

My own codec / DShow filter setup:

Unregistered all of Nero's AV codecs.
Valex AC3 filter .70b (prefer it to the leaked RC5)
DivX 6.0 (don't like it, but I need it on there)
XviD 1.03 (1.1b2 seems nice and stable, too)
Haali media (matroska) splitter + Tobias OggDS 0.9.9.5
or
Gabest Ogg Splitter + Gabest Matroska splitter
CoreVorbis
CoreAAC
FFDShow
MPEG2 codec installed by my software DVD player
VSFilter 2.36

Hate to admit it, but FFDShow's come a very long way. It does a great job of decoding almost everything out there including AVC/.h264, and its VFW function is handy, too. I use the latest Zoom Player beta to play non-DVD media files.

Re: Help with Codec Packs....

With Azureus I downloaded Serenity, the new movie, and I've tried to test it on DivX Player, Windows Media Player, WinDVD Player, and RealPlayer, all to no avail. Windows Media Player produced an error message that (1) Video Date: FOURCC code "FMPR" and (2) Audio Data: Tag 80 are needed. Can you tell me what that means? Is it a codec I need? And if it is a codec, how can I obtain these two files or items? I'm fairly sure that I'll need codec for both a Video Data file and an Audio Data file, i.e. the FOURCC code "FMPR" and the "Tag 80" info. Please advise if I can get these, where I can get them, and how to use them.

Sounds like a possible corrupted file. Try VLC Media Player.
