I hope this is not a stupid question. Ever since i instaled Nero 6.0 on my system i have had the following problem.

When i insert a dvd movie i get this error:

Desktop
Access to specific device, path, or file is denied.

Now this did not happen with other viewing software packages.

My system is running windows 2000 pro, i have every upgrade for every piece of software and hardware on my system. I have contacted nero over 8 times with no response. I have the latest aspi, and i have given permission to every folder, program and device.

Please, can someone help me.

I hope this isent a stupid answer, have you tried removing nero and using some different burning software? you might be best of using the nero clean tool found here

Thanks for the info; but i have tried the clean tool; and reinstalled nero and still the problem exist. Having paid for nero and been led to understand that nero should work i am still looking for a solution for the existing problem.

When a dvd movie is insterted i should not get an "Desktop" error (Access to specific device, path or file is denied). If anyone can help me with this i would be grateful.

@dan if i was you i would remove nero & get the latest DVD Decripter & DVD Shrink both are free (but dvddecripter you can make a donation they only ask for $2 its well worth it).
When i first started burning dvd`s nero was a pain in the arse for me & my mates allthough i use it now it still does play up some times.

Thanks for the advice. I do have the software you mentioned and use them with no incidents todate. Unfortunately that does not address my original problem. Being stubborn i guess i am hopeful someone will have a fix for my Nero problem. I find it hard to believe i am the only one that has experienced this particular difficulty.

Once again, thank you for your help but unfortunately my Nero problem still exist and i am still looking for a solution.

The problem is people expect to get all there answers here, before i discoverd club cdfreaks i used to Google all my problems as it was the only way to get answers.

Thank You CKIN2001 for your reply. Unfortunately those fixes are not pertinent to my problem (i did find them in google by the way, thanks again).

My problem is that when a dvd is inserted into either of my 2 dvd drives it does not start the 'viewing program' (in this case the Nero Showtime). Instead, it gives me the error:

Desktop

Access to specific device, path, or file is denied.

All of my hardware and software are updated to latest drivers and downloads and the drives themself have autorun on.

Any further help will be appreciated.

Is this porblem within AutoPlay?

If you disbale autoplay, or hold down the shift key, and try starting the Nero App manually, then selecting the DVD, does it still happen.

I'm just trying to deduce if this is really a bug in Nero, or possibly within Windows.

I should have been move percise in my explanation. Prior to loading Nero i had windvd player on my system. When i inserted a dvd it would automaticly start the dvdplayer i had on my system.

Then i purchased nero. I uninstalled my other dvd playing software (nero has nero showtime).

Now when i insert a dvd into any of my drives i get the previously mentioned access error. Nero Showtime does not start automaticly (there support emailed me that it should start, that was all the help i got from them).

It will run if i select it manually. But that is not what i am looking for. I perhaps naively assume to get what i had before and more with the purchase of nero, not loose features.

Hopefully this helps explain my problem. Either way, when a dvd is inserted it should open a folder showing the contained files not give me an error message; at least that is what i have been told; and seen before when no dvd player was installed on my system.

Sounds to me like parts of the old software are still left behind. WinDVD may have not been removed completely. You sed add/remove to remove it right? You may have to reinstall WinDVD and uninstall it again. maybe this time it will remove completely. Also do some manual removes from registry and program files sometimes leaves a folder with left over files. Also check all startup areas, startupcpl is good for this.

the problem sounds like the program that windows is trying to open due to the file association no longer exists. the easiest way to fix this, if it is the problem, is to open up my computer and then select tools => folder options. within the folder options there is a file types tab. if you scroll down within this tab, there should be a file type for DVD. if this is set to open with the uninstalled program - then change it.

Thank you for the advice everyone. Here is what i have done with it.

1) Checked registry for any leftover entries or other 'bad' items (cleaned and optimized).

2)Checked startupcpl (nothing appears to be wrong here) (infact i normally have only the minimum running to maximize my system performance).

3) Went to control panel and checked to see if file types of BUP, IFO, VOB have the proper association (these are the only file types i can find on the dvd itself). BUP has none, IFO shows Nero Showtime, VOB shows Nero Showtime (please note when i manually click on a file on my dvd Nero Showtime does run, it just will not run when i first insert the movie dvd).

4) I even tried associating BUP with Nero Showtime.

None of these modifications, repairs, etc. have had any effect. Still get the same error message "Access to specific device, path, or file is denied".

? Am i really supposed to have a file type of DVD associated to Nero Showtime ? I can find no listing in my control panel/folders/filetype and have never seen one there before.

Again, thank everyone for your help and suggestions this is way more then i have gotten from Nero (They have the worse TS i have ever seen and if given my choice again would never spend hard earned money on their products). But the original problem still exist. I cannot believe there is not a solution out there; and hopefully we can find it.

sorry, im using winxp and have a dvd listing. im assuming there is one with win2k as well. whatever program is setup to autoplay the dvd is the culprit

Well, there appears to be no answer to my problem... so i installed powerdvd and .....what do you know my dvd's play again on insert to dvd.

FYI: going into file type the only thing that changed (as regards VOB or IFO files) is that VOB is now associated with PowerDVD (it along with IFO was associated with Nero Showtime).

This is not the solution i was looking for, because it does not address the real Nero problem, but Nero is no help at all, and you guys are great but it appears we have done all we can.

I found that the problem is registry setting

HKey_Classes_Root\DVD\Shell\Play\Command\Default which points to Windows 2000 DvdPlay.exe

I renamed the Command key to OldCommand (just to be safe) and created a new Command key that pointed to Nero's ShowTime.exe. The result looked
like this:

HKey_Classes_Root\DVD\Shell\Play\Command
Default = C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero ShowTime\ShowTime.exe /Play %L

After I made this change, DVDs correctly Autoplay using Nero Showtime.

BTW: I also did all the Assoc and FType stuff which made no difference for me either.

I experienced the same autoplay problem and identical error message:
"Access to the specified device, path or file is denied" after I installed RealPlayer. Though I configered RealPlayer to play Real media, I set the option to still have Microsoft DVDplayer autoplay my DVDs. It turns out that RealPlayer erroneously changed
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DVD\shell\play\command
from a REG_EXPAND_SZ type key to just a REG_SZ. Though the command string was correct, it would not execute correctly.

I strongly suspect that this may be the problem that many users are experiencing when installing applications that have their own DVD player. The way to fix this is to use REGEDT32 (not REGEDIT) to delete the REG_SZ type key and create a REG_EXPAND_SZ type key. Note that REGEDIT does not support the REG_EXPAND_SZ type.

I hope that this helps someone out there. I personnally struggle for about two weeks until I finally figured it out.
