I would do a fresh install of 98 first then install XP on the second partition. XP will then manage both OS's.

Or use a program like Bootmagic from Powerquest...it handles multiple boot perfectly.

I think I need to put more detail on here....

I have got Sony VAIO laptop (with docking station - very latest one) - Win XP home edition pre-installed. (C partition)

I just install win98 on D partition it boots brilliantly but it does not let me do dual booting - it simply boots with Win98:mad:

There is another problem, it does not detect Cd-rom (what an interesting.....)

That makes me afraid a fresh install Win98 (just in case it does not detect CD-rom)....

your master boot record is messed up,caused by overwriting it with win98,which hasn't the capability for dual booting...
Only NT based systems like win2000 and winXP can, without the help of an third party bootmanager..

You can try to fix it by the recovery option of xp or by installing xp again,so that NT loader overwrites it again(choose the same partition for xp as before),or you can try to edit the mbr, wich ain't so simple...

Apologise if I misunderstand what you are saying.... I think Win98 has got the ability for dual booting...

As I mentioned, I used do with Win98 and WinNT (or Win2000). I normally used third party bootmanager(Partition magic) when I used with Linux.

The main point is not that how I can recover from it (which I did it) but how I can make dual booting with Win98 and Win XP....

Dude,if you wanna use the NT boot loader, you ALWAYS need to install that o/s with that ability as last 1....
Other o/s(win 95/98/ME) from M$ simply can't dual boot without using other boot managers...
So if you wanna dual boot with the configuration you have now,you need to install System Commander,BootMagic,OSloader or a similar program....
If you wanna use the NT Loader instead, you have to do it the way I've posted earlier.....

I think you and me misunderstand each other... Obviously, if you want to have dual booting... win98 with win NT or 2000(which i want)... no matter what you need to install win NT or 2000 (which has got NT boot loader.....) I did not mean I want to have dual boot for (Win 95/98/ME - I do not want it)...

I successfully dual boot WinME and XP. ME was installed first then XP on my other drive. ME uses a FAT32 file system and XP uses NTFS. It works perfectly without any 3rd party app as a boot manager. XP has this feature built in. The only issue is with FAT32 partitions not being able to see an NTFS partition. Although you can access FAT32 from within NTFS. Just make sure XP is installed on the secondary or extended partition. Believe me - if I can do it, anyone can.
