Distributed Computing on Home Network??????

I've got a nice home network at my house linking my two computers with 2 10/100Mbps Netgear network cards and one 4-port 10/100/1000Mbps hub also by Netgear.

I've heard of distributed computing where you can have 2 or more computers linked together and combine their processing power. I am interested to know if such software exists to enable you to do this on your home network.

After all, this would be useful for DVD-VCD conversions, Adobe Premiere editing, and many other hard-core apps I often use.

Please, if you have any knowledge about this topic, please share it with me!!!

The program is called SETI@HOME, btw.

I know there are some programming infrastructures to do this. So the answer would probably be yes, but.........

You would have to write your own program to do this, and from my own experience, programming for ethernet is like shooting a fish with a net, in that neither the programming nor the fish make any logical sense.

I think perhaps the point here is that it is done all the time by big corporations for research when needing the number crunching ability, but for us home users, it's probably not worth the effort, unless you have lots of time on your hands with nothing better to do.

Maybe that should be in windows 2004, distibuted computing across a LAN. Maybe you could norton utilites up about that.

I have a 486 with 8MB ram sitting in the corner gathering dust, maybe it can help get me an extra 2FPS in Quake3-UT2!

This is possible in Linux with specially designed cluster code. It is called a Beowulf cluster. It does require specific code and applications, so it is not a generic solution. If you do want to cluster computers together, do a search on "Beowulf cluster" and you will get lots of info.
