General Software Discuss, Defrag'd File...what is it? at International Chat: Software related forum; I've been defrag'n my HD for a while now and I always notice this one file just sittin there in the middle of the HD...Is there an app out there that can tell me what it is?Everytime I defrag I hope it'll pull itself in

Defrag'd File...what is it?

I've been defrag'n my HD for a while now and I always notice this one file just sittin there in the middle of the HD...Is there an app out there that can tell me what it is?Everytime I defrag I hope it'll pull itself in closer to the other files but nope....

That's most likely your Master File Table which is essentially a Volume Table of Contents (VTOC) for a drive formatted for NTFS. It's an unmovable file.

yes, another defragger. from my own experience i can only recommend O&O defrag v8 - in it you can click on every 'cluster' of your hdd to view which files are in it...

update..it says it part of the dll cache and some other uninstall somethin or other..hmmm

you should definitely try a boot-time defragmentation, to move files which are normally blocked by (running) windows.
