cdr dvd rom drives problem

Recently I started having problems with both my CDR and DVD Rom drives. When I insert a new info disc the drives cannot read the disc till I right-click on the drive's 'Properties', then 'Eject', then locate "volume' and then click 'Populate'. This will return 0 disc info. Upon reinserting disc, I have to again click the drive's properties , volume and 'populate' to get the drives to recognise the disc contents. The drives retain an image of the previous disk's contents, it seems. Installing multidisk games and software I have to do the same thing.

This happens with both drives. Never had the problem since I had them for about 2 years now.

I'm using XP Pro, CDR drive is Plextor PleXWriter 24/10/40A and my DVD rom drive is a Pioneer DVD-Rom 106.

I have always used NTI CdMaker, VCDEasy, Blindwrite/BlindRead. CloneCD, Alcohol, Nero with no problems.

I'm not sure which recently installed software has affected the drives. Recently installed are NTI Backup Now and Acronis Disk Image and Editor. Other than having made a bootable CD image for recovery purposes with Acronis Disk Image, I haven't done much with the others.

Hope someone here can kindly help.

cd dvd rom drive problems2

Went through all my recently installed programs and found out that the CloneCD version 4317 by Slysoft has automatically checked the option to lock drive. Everything runs fine now after unchecking the option. Hope this message helps someone else who should be having the same problem.

Will delete this thread after this post.

I have a similar problem, and know how frustrating this can be. Except I do not have CloneCD installed, nor does the 'populate' trick work for me.

I am desperate and have posted my own tale of woes here:

http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread....threadid=88330

Would appreciate any insight.

If it's not CloneCD you could have a look at this. Might help

Re: CD drive locked

I'm having a bit of the same problem.
I bought an OEM Lite-On 832s. I am running Windows XP. If I insert a DVD, the drive reads as a "CD Drive" in Explorer. When I insert a CD, the drive seems to recognize the disk in Explorer (displays the disk name and so forth), but it cannot read any of the disk's contents. On a related note, the drive I had previously installed in that slot, which was a cd-rw/dvd rom combo drive, had the same problem. I thought (like an idiot) that if I just installed a new drive into the same slot, it would solve the problem.

The drive is installed as the master in the secondary IDE slot. It is the only CD/DVD drive I have installed. Curiously, if I go into disk management from the Computer Management program, it shows that there is a disk in the drive and how much space the disk's contents take up on the CD.

I will go through all the steps listed i n Dee-ehn's post, and will get back to you all!

Re: CD drive locked

No, this did not work for me. I saw a posting over at the CNet forum which mentioned Symantec's System Works 2k4 to be the cause of all this. I will try to uninstall 2k4 next.

Re: CD drive locked

Messed up XP or some stopped service sometime leads to this. Best cure is to reinstall OS.

Re: CD drive locked

Doesn't CCD's lock drive feature simply prevent you from opening the drive while CCD is using it?
Or
prevent other apps from accessing the drive?

When I'm using CDex and start CCD, CCD delivers a message that it can't get sole access to the drive.

======================

I had an HP CD Burner that stopped "seeing" discs.
I tried it as master and slave.

I replace it with a CD-ROM drive that worked for a while but soon wouldn't "see" discs.
I tried it as a slave and as a master.
The LED flashes for an instant upon insertion.
SOME time passes before the LED flashes again and the disc is spit out.

The CD-ROM drive is currently the master.
An OOOOOOld TDK CD Burner is the slave.
The TDK "sees" everything and works fine.

Re: CD drive locked

I am having related problems. I had a Plextor CD and it always seemed to lock up when I had a two disk install. Recently, I discovered the drive always locked up when playing a music CD. I replaced the drive with a new Lite-On and same problem. Someone here suggested replacing the IDE cable, same problem. I decided to test a music CD in my Pioneer drive and same problem there.

I use Creative's music software and am beginning to wonder if this is the problem. Any ideas?

Re: CD drive locked

It does it with all 3 drives so it is not a drive problem. It may be the BIOS. Since I mainly notice it with music, it may be Creative Labs software. I should try play a CD with other software and see what happens. It is still a puzzle.
