So, I have a quick question, which is the BEST FREE DVD player software?

VLC can play DVD's. But I have another question, When I put a DVD in, can I make so that it detects it and uses VLC to play the dvd?

Yes, tell Window's to open DvD's with VLC player upon insertion.
