Re: Azureus torrent client and Firewall. Are they compatible?

Why would Azureus be any different than any other application?
Kerio 2.1.5 works fine, so does SP2's firewall among with others although I wouldn't recommend Zone Alarm's products since they are known to cause trouble in general.

Re: Azureus torrent client and Firewall. Are they compatible?

All firewalls block unrequested communications by default.
In order for Azureus to function at it's best, you must be able to connect to both local and remote connections. Since your firewall block incoming request by default, then you cannot establish remote connection. This affects your download speeds and is considered a NAT problem and will result in your health indicator having only a yellow smiley at best.

To fix this problem and increase download speeds, your firewall must allow the option of port forwarding which would allow you to open a port to accommodate Azureus communications more efficiently. The free version of Zone Alarm does not allow this, Zone Alarm Pro does. Azureus uses port 6881 by default but you could change this within the program and open your port accordingly.

I've seen my maximum download speeds increase from 20-30KB/s to up tp 280KB/S by having green smileys due to port forwarding.

Information can be found Here.

Re: Azureus torrent client and Firewall. Are they compatible?

I would have guessed that "allow client / allow server" would grant sufficient (excessive!) firewall passage in zonealarm - for Java-based clients (like Azaureus) you may also have to grant excessive firewall permissions to Java.

A rules based firewall like Kerio or Outpost allows much tighter configuration.

i hate to say it - but i would do your job. if there is a firewall in place, you will have to talk to the system admin in order to get outside it. and if the admin knows you want to use company bandwidth for torrents, i imagine he wont be your friend.

Are you aware a lot of Linux distributions are distributed through Bittorrent. No need to assume he's downloading private stuff, I would say...

Given you are behind a firewall, you will need to somehow find out what ports the firewall is allowing through (there are usually some ports left open for daily activity), you can't be blocked completely. Even if you manage to acquire this information, you will need to direct Azureus to now somehow work using the open ports, wether this be an option in the softwar eor a registry tweak/hack.

Overlall, there is very little that can be done, and the option given above is not easy because it requires 2 difficult pieces of information to attain and apply.

Check dslreports.com to see if they have any new tools that might possibly sniff out a vulnerability or open port.

who did that? i said downloading torrents. i dont think there are many sysadmins that would like to see that much bandwidth going to one user for a program like that - especially if its for personal usage.

i think you assumed wrong here
