About formatting, for the last time! - Club CDFreaks

My hard drive is FAT 32.
And I want to format it to NTFS.
When I insert the Windows XP Install CD I have the option to choose to change the Partition from FAT 32 to NTFS.
The hard drive is 40 GB and there is 15 GB free space.
My Question is:
If I choose to change from FAT 32 to NTFS from the Windows XP Install CD
just the free space 15 GB will be NTFS or the whole hard disc will be NTFS and everything will be eresed and just the Windows will be installed from the CD?
I fear if I choose this way that just the free space will be formatted to NTFS and I will loose the other space from the hard drive, or I am wrong?

Or I should format from FAT 32 to NTFS using Partition Magic?

Which way do you suggest me to do the formatting?

What you should do is delete the existing partition. create a new one and format that in the NTFS.this will allow you to use all the space on your hard drive for that partition.

I want to create a new clean partition using all the space on my hard drive for that partition and I don't mind data loss - I have backups.

Deleting the existing and creating a new partition - I can do this from the Windows XP Install CD?
and Partition Magic is not necessary, right?

Incorrect. You either need to use a partitioning tool to remove the partitions or download a utility from your hadd manufacturer to performa low level format first. For Maxtor the utilit is called PowerMax, a low level format strips everything off the drive and resets it to factory settings.

start -> run "cmd", then type convert (drive letter) /fs:ntfs

with fat16/32 and ntfs, you can go fat to ntfs just fine, but if you wanna go back to fat, you have to format
