Re: Problems posting at CD Freaks

Active Scripting must also be enabled in IE in order to use those features.
If you place CD Freaks on your list of IE Trusted Sites then those features are automatically enabled when you visit the site.

Otherwise you must manually enter tag information for those features.

Re: Problems posting at CD Freaks

Thanks Nemesys.

I put CD Freaks in the trusted sites and made sure that scripting was enabled. I even rebooted after this but still doesn't work. I also notice that when I click on Post Reply, the status bar never quits saying 'Opening page htt://club.cdfreaks.com/newreply.php?do=newrely&noquote....'

Re: Problems posting at CD Freaks

to add images - use the "Manage Attachments" feature - after going Advanced in the forum post box.
Browse to your Hdd image and click Upload
try to post PNG imag format - they are small (in KB) and crisp for displaying Text - oh btw - there's a limit on file size (~95KB tops)

but clicking the buttons as you describe is a JavaScript issue - make sure it's enabled if you want to use those features...What OS and SP ? Do you have Sun JRE installed ? if so, what version ? 1.4.x.x - 1.5.x.x ?

Look in the same place you did for Active Scripting - and Also check under Advanced Tab in Internet options (Enable Java logging is the only necessary one, iirc) - also make sure your Firewall (or perhaps even your HOSTS file)is not Blocking this site and/or it's Servers

You must accepot "Cookies" to use / log-in to this site, and be able to Reply/Respond to threads - "Accept all cookies only from original server only" (not 3rd party) is a good option to use if you "customize" your cookie perfs - also "Allow all session cookies" is overall another choice that's pretty safe, as afar as protecting your privacy.

Clear out your cookies and Internet caches if all else fails - and set the Cache sizes on all browsers to something humane, like 10MB.
The Advanced tab in IE Options has a check box that clears the Temporary Internet Files after each session - enable this

Can't post New Thread to CD Freaks forum!

This message deserves a New Thread! But as the Title states, I can't seem to do so.

I've been *trying* to post a new, original thread onto the CD Freaks forum (*any* sub-forum) for two days. I can't seem to do so. Not sure what the problem is as I posted a new thread onto the Newbie Forum about three days ago.

Upon clicking Submit Thread, the status bar on Firefox indicates that CD Freaks is processing, but then it terminates and I'm still on the editing pages (i.e. the utility we use to compose/edit threads and replies).

To troubleshoot further, I used a totally different computer in my home. I also used IE. Same problem.

I thought it CD Freaks may be blocking my IP. But then you wouldn't be reading this *reply to thread* (a function that seems to work fine).

I have sent several emails to helpdesk@cdfreaks.com, but so far no reply.

Can someone please help -- thanks!

::SOLVED:: Problems posting at CD Freaks

Well, it turns out that my 'hosts' file at "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc" had "127.0.0.1 ads.cdfreaks.com #[eTrust.Ads.cdfreaks]" in it. Once I removed this, I can now post smileys and all seems well.

Another problem I started having after installing SP2 for XP (last weekend) is that my browser's back button would need clicked 2-5 times just to actually go to the previous page. Clicking it once would just 'update' the ad banner at the top of the page (which could not be found by IE due to my hosts file). This seems to be related to the fact that the ads at the top of each forum page were being blocked by my hosts file. Once I removed the entry from my hosts file, all is back to normal.

Any advice as to why this was happening would be nice.

see...it works now

Re: Problems posting at CD Freaks

I too can't post a new topic. I've checked my hosts file and all the IE options are either on Enable or Prompt (although I don't see a Java logging option)and I've added cdfreaks to the Trusted Sites list.

I noticed that, under Advanced, it says Use Java 2 v1.3.1_16 for <applet>. Is this OK? I would have thought I'd be having other problems on cdfreaks is this wrong. I also can't post using Opera so perhaps there's a common cause.

are you sure you went IE Options >> (choose) Internet Zone >> Custom
or if you have..
What OS version and SP ?
What version of IE ?
Do you have any other AdBlock type apps running?
Got Windows XPSP2 Firewall enabled ?
Cleared out your Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, and History ?

See if there's a "Java Plugin" in Control Panel
Open it and choose the Cache Tab and "Clear" Cache -- then Untick the "Use Cache" box.
(Make notes of what you change in here - especially if you change anything under the other tabs)

BTW - Java v1.3.1_16 is pretty old (as in Win95), but perhaps should work ok - some things require 1.4.x_x

Re: Problems posting at CD Freaks

Thanks for the reply but I've just found that I can post a new topic again, both with Opera and IE.

Nothing I did prior to my first post in this thread seemed to make any difference and I didn't see your reply until I came back here now to let people know it's sorted, so I've got no idea why it's working again!

Thanks for the tip about the Java version I'm using being so old, I'll upgrade it just in case it's causing complications. There is a Control Panel icon for V1.3 and I can see the 'Clear Cache' option but there doesn't seem to be a 'Use Cache' box that can be unticked.

In case it helps anyone else having this problem, I'll answer your questions about my setup.

Yep, did the Internet Zone >> Custom thing right.

Using XP Pro SP2.

IE 6.0

I'm using PeerGuardian but it's not blocking HTTP.

I use Kerio Firewall 2.5 rather than XP's firewall but it's allowing Opera and IE to connect on any port (UDP and TCP). I do see entries in Kerio's log that it's blocked an incoming connection from a website that I'm visiting, but this is shown as a 'TCP Ack attack' which is not a user-created rule and there is no software connected with said incoming connection (shows: Owner - no owner), so as far as I know it's just a built-in function of Kerio that can't be changed.

Yep, cleared all temporary Internet files both for Opera and IE.

Re: Problems posting at CD Freaks

hi;
and your welcome (though i really didn't do anything - clearing your Temp Inet Files caches may have helped...do it regularly - see IE Options | Advanced Tab | Clear TIF...blah-blah)

-- but it's real nice to get a clear concise t-shooting checklist as a reply, and you've answered all questions i asked comprehensively too. Nice quality to have when asking for help.

All i can say about about a "TCP acknowledgement attack" is that it's likely an ICMP pinging from a site's AdServer (cookie related perhaps even)....I've only used ZoneAlarm in the past,and now i'm not using a software firewall (too resource intensive for my liking - but i don't suggest this for 'most' others - and I'm behind a Router, plus www.GRC.com ShieldsUP tests show all my PORTS are STEALTH I don't even use winXP - so YMMV

The Option to not use the Cache in the Java Plugin is likely due to it's old version then...
Look here (note the "Location" bar address) and go there in WinExplorer and look for a folder called "Cache" and clear it (manually) if you find it filled with junk;
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/...nel.html#cache
(obviously - substitute 'your' %USERNAME% where \LouisMartin\ is in the PATH)

here's another XP Java article you should see;
http://www.mvps.org/marksxp/WindowsXP/java.php

There are many articles about Java VM and just upgrading it can be a PITA, and break your system - so go slowly if you decide to and be careful Heck, if it ain't broke...don't fix it

Enjoy your stay here
I know your questions and methodical tshooting replies will help others whom read this, looking for assistance

*edit;
and since you were so sincere, and i know now you use IE regularly - this will help you configure it's 'Security'
