Inactivity Timeout

Is there anyway to increase the time to be considered inactive? Ten minutes is too short. It may take me more than ten minutes just to browse through one thread, especially when I'm being interrupted by work. I get done reading a forum and go to the next and I have no idea which threads are new and what I read on my previous visit.

Other sites I visit will keep the new messages flagged until I actually visit the forum. I could read just the messages in the NEC forum ,for example, and come back the next day and read the new messages still waiting for me in the Liteon forum.

Thanks.

Re: Inactivity Timeout

This is very frustrating... It just happened again. I started reading new posts in one forum, got a phone call and 20 minutes later CDF shows that all the new posts have been read (in every forum).

Look something up, lose your new post indications - it's a right pain!

Re: Inactivity Timeout

Sorry for not responding earlier...the past 2 weeks I hardly had time to think for myself...

You say that 10 minutes isn't enough, but what time frame would be sufficient, make me a suggestion...

As far as I can remember, the 10 minutes is not really thought about, it is the standard setting. I am willing to consider a different time setting, but I would like to hear suggestions...

Re: Inactivity Timeout

It's even set to 15 minutes (900 seconds). Unfortunately the board software doesn't allow changing this value on a per user base.

I first use the tabs in Firefox to open everything I'm interested in and then start reading. So no timeout occurs for me.

Re: Inactivity Timeout

I'm not sure what the correct timeout should be. I just know that this is the only board that I have this problem. Others that I frequent (DSL Reports, HomeTheaterSpot, AVSForum) do not reset the read flag of forums I do not visit. I can read a forum in the morning and come back 3 hours later and read another forum. Only the topics in the forum I visit get marked as read. I don't know if this is possible with the software you use, but it sure would be nice. Otherwise, I would think a long timeout of 90 minutes or more would be better.

Re: Inactivity Timeout

I guess these forums are running a different software.
vBulletin only remembers the last time you were online and changes this value after the timeout value (15 mins. here) has been reached. Everything that was posted before this value will be shown as old, everything else as new posts.

Re: Inactivity Timeout

Another VBB based forum disabled automatic read post timeout altogether...

Hated it at first, but so long as you remember to "mark forums read" when leaving, it means never losing your place.

Re: Inactivity Timeout

I must admit that I prefer the current setting. I guess I would always forget to mark everything read.

Re: Inactivity Timeout

Weird. I guess I don't use features you're talking about... Once I'm logged-in to CDFreaks, I've never experienced any kind of "time out" problem. Once I'm signed-in, I can pretty much do anything... Search, Post, Reply, see New Posts. What am I missing?

Re: Inactivity Timeout

It's just a matter of which posts appear as new and when posts are marked as already being read.
