Yet another WC3 post A colleague asked me if I could back up WC3 for him, as he could not make a working copy (using CCd4). After reading many of the posts, I thought "I can do this". Hah! Talk about soul destroying! (Thank God for re-writables, or I would have had a bucket full of coasters). Using a 32123S/XSOR and CCD v4.0.1.10, I started with the secure-rom profile from this forum - no good. I tried changing the profiles - no good. I could install the game, but it kept asking for the cd to be inserted when I tried to run it. I tried slowing down the read/burn speeds - no good. I then tried CD-Mate, as some claimed success with it - no good. I tried using my cd-rom as the reader - no good. This one actually burnt me a CD full of nothing - no data at all!!!! After spending numerous hours, over three days, on this I was feeling a bit aggro, to say the least. As a last resort, I re-booted to CCd v3 (I run multiple, bootable partitions - very handy at times). Set it to read sub. data/audio and that was it!!!! Not one, but three working copies!!!!! And I could use maximum read/write, just let it do it's own thing. So there you have it, although what I'm not quite sure. Perhaps some of you genius's (genii??) out there can tell me why CCDv3.3.4.1 will work, with the "secure-rom" settings, but the same settings in CCDv4.0.1.10 won't work? Buggered if I know. dum dik.

No, I didn't try the regen. setting 'cos the experts in the forum said it's not needed for secure-rom. Once I found v3 worked, I was a happy chappy. As it was late Sunday night and I was fed up by then I wasn't interested in any more experiments!I did, however, try again the next night - the results are tacked onto aggybong's thread. The bottom line is......I did it! Yay for me! I would be interested to hear whether this works for others who are having problems with secure-rom. Another thought - I don't have access to NWN, which also seems to be causing problems, maybe someone could try it with CCD v3.3.4.1 and post their results. Sayonara, dik.

The thing is that results using lite-on writers to copy WCIII (unpatched NWN) are incredibly variable, particularly where the 24102b is used as both reader and writer (though problems and variations with other models are common too). If you want to waste a lot of time on it do a search of those games on the clonecd forum and you'll see wildly different results with writers of the same model and with the same firmware. As it happens, my 24102b can copy WCIII with the default game cd profile with 4.0.1.10 (but it couldn't with 4.0.1.9 unless regenerate data sectors was also checked though that itself makes little sense as olli didn't do anything to improve securerom copying with the last update). Attempts with my writer to copy it with clonecd 3.3.4.1 all failed, though I should mention that I never tried it with regenerate data sectors. I should also indicate though that, as far as I'm aware, there are only 3 posts of anyone successfully copying WC III using the 24102b as both reader and writer using the default game cd profile (mine being one of them), though most people with that writer have been able to get a good image and a working back-up with a custom profile. However, if you wade your way through the threads you'll find that some people have been able to get a good image but their writer hasn't been able to burn it correctly. I put it down to individual variations between writers (e.g. you may have noticed in one of FutureProof's posts elsewhere his remark that anyone would think that his 24102b and mine had been manufactured on different planets, such are the differences in their characteristics; mine is the atypical one, btw) and, in particular, in their capabilities in accurately reading and writing sub-codes. As for hide cd media, you're right. Olli has said, though I can't recall precisely where, that hide cd media should definitely be off when reading a securerom new cd. Why, I have no idea but who I am I to question his advice?

I'd read the posts referring to hide cd causing problems and tried a read/write with it disabled, using v4, but still no good. I guess my burner was made on a day with no "R" in it and the Chi energy was flowing the wrong way in the factory. Ah! Sweet mystery of life. And remember "It's not the cough that carries you off It's the coffin they carry you off in". dik.
