Question about a matched reader/writer

Hi All,

OK, looks like it's time to upgrade my combination of Toshiba XM-6602B and Mitsumi CR-4804TE (can you say "old skool"?! But believe it or not once upon a time this was considered the perfect combination for backing up CDs...)

Anyway, I'm in the market for a new DVD reader and a CD recorder. As far as DVD drives go the choice is between a Toshiba (SD-M1612 probably) and a Lite-On drive. For writers I'm considering either a Lite-On or Asus CRW-4816A (or CRW-5224A, I would assume these two are pretty similar?).

My question is this: which combination will cover the largest amount of read/write features? I've been reading FutureProof's very helpful posts and recommendations - he seems to like the Toshiba for reading but what's this about it not being able to read twin sectors?

Anyway, I'd appreciate any help or tips - thanks in advance!

PS. Anyone tried out the CyberDrive CW099D yet? Looks like a great drive but since it is so new buying it may be a bit of pot luck at the moment.

ASUS burners = reader & writer in one.
The new Toshi DVD-ROMs are fantastic.
There's a big sticky thread about hardware in this forum - check it out

Thanks! and yes, I have read through the big sticky thread in this forum. I am still wondering, which DVD drives are better to get, Lite-On or Toshiba? I read somewhere that Liteys have more success reading protected audio CDs, is that correct? How about new SafeDisc?

Thanks again for your help.
