How can i do a backup of a playstation 2 game?
should i have an DVD Writer?

Some ps2 games are cd based so you can use a cd writer but some are dvd based which you will need a dvd writer and remember you will also need a modchip to play the games
also in clone you will have to download the libcrypt profile from here for the cd based ones
clone cannot however do the dvd based ones
for this use nero or recordnow (and dvd writer)

If you are looking to burn ps2 games, you should get a dvd writer and use alcohol 120 for the burn (it has a ps2 profile).

Will a 'swap' method work instead of the modchip? Can I use GameShark to boot the PS2 which will open the drive then put in a copy? Soldering in the Messiah2 for example is quite risky, too hot an iron and there goes your motherboard!

Use a 15w iron and you'll be ok. No you can't straight swap without a mod using gameshark.
