Laserlock Star

Does anybody knows how can I backup SYSTRAN PERSONAL 4 EN-GR?
It is an English-Greek translator and here in Greece it is distributed by MLS (the Laserlock Company)
In the root directory it has 3 files: systran.exe, autorun.inf, systran.ico and a hidden folder named HDEAS022 DF. In this folder there are 11 hidden files: HDEAS022.TXT, HDEAS0222.TXT, HDEAS0223.TXT, HDEAS0224.TXT, HDEAS0225.TXT, HDEAS0226.TXT, HDEAS0227.TXT, HDEAS0228.TXT, HDEAS0229.TXT, HDEAS02210.TXT, HDEAS02211.TXT with size 37.107.000 bytes each.
When I Install the program, it runs a cd check which fails on the backup cd.
I tried to backup this cd with clonecd, blindwrite, alcohol 120% with no success. The clony xxl 2010 and tccd scout say UNKNOWN PROTECTION.
Is this a new version of LASERLOK or a new protection from MLS?
I also visited www.laserlock.com and they say that there is a new unbreakable version of laserlock named “LASERLOCK STAR”. I believe that this cd has this protection since it is distributed from MLS.

The LaserLock version that appeared on Desperados was new and defeated CloneCD. As soon as Olli got onto it, it was fixed and LaserLock was again harmless. This version (Desperados ) is what is infrequently referred to as LaserLock 2 (it was Aug 2001, I recall)

hi,

i was just reading the news on the mainpage and someone there mentioned that 'his' friend defeated the STAR version by doing a twinpeaks on it !

Thus he would have read it with BWA builder, loaded that into Twinpeaks and modified the clone image !

Does someone here have a pic or even results with the STAR cd and BWA builder ?
Just want to know if they to use modified sector densities !

Hi again!
Well I managed to make some working copies of this cd, with alcohol and blindwrite but there is a strange thing.
These copies work only a few times. I mean that I can install the program and to run it from the backup cd but after 5 or 6 times, the backup cd stops working and the cd check fails. Also then I can’t install the program from the same cd.
I find this very strange!

someone report me results about a laserlock disc and bwa builder, and it doesn't seem to be the case.. so I doubt also about the twinpeak results.

Hey

Seems like bfc is right. I have been trying to backup this DAMN systran CD for a couple of days now with no sucess with any of the well known backup utilities.

I managed to make a working mls image file but when I try to back it up on a CD-RW fails to work. Strange thing is that the mounted image works!

Hi,

Only Alcohol seems to be doing something right and only the newer version 1.4.0.103. The previous version I think it was failing.

I used a Lite-On 48246 (VSS0A) to read the original CD with read subchannel and data position mesurment set to high, Read speed set to Max and DPMS speed to 1x.

I think that even reading it with my Plextor CDROM produced a working image, can't recall that , too many tries that can't remember.

This new laser lock thing is using multiple type of locks besides scrambling, encryption and anti-disasember... I think they also use special CDs so a 1:1 copy might not be possible but I am not so sure about that. The original CD ATIP is set to uknown and there are no bad sectors or bad CRCs reported anywhere. It also seems like the original CD image was created with Nero. However, another strange thing is that ClonyXXL 2.0.1.1a (using ASPI 4.6) says that is a bad sector protected CD.

Another strange thing is that eventhough the CD size is reported 411MB, there is no visual end of the data track on the CD. (Can you double check on that bfc?)

I have only tried to back up the image on CDRW and not CDR but I doubt this would make any difference whatsoever.

Also, make sure you deactivate the systran icon on the task bar because that is another lock they use. If you activate it from the original CD and then you run it from the backup CD then your backup CD will work but it is only temporary.

Anyway, here is a BWA of this new laserlock:

Update: Seems like blindsuite images also work. This is getting strange. I donno!!! Why wouldn't the same image work if burned in a CD? Any ideas anyone?

And it gets even more intresting: Using ClonyXXL sector viewer, and assuming it can read correctly, almost 95% of all the CD sectors (27-199336) read the same pattern which is probably garbage. The same pattern is in all 11 TXT files and all 11 files are IDENTICAL and have this pattern:

##########################################
##########################################
#######
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
##########################################
##########################################
#######
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
.........................

This is probably laserlock v3 and I highly doubt it has anything to do with the so called version 2 (Desperados). Probably the whole CD file system or some part of it may be somehow different from what it appears to be so I am not so certain that all of the above results are correct. This is an intresting lock!

This is a BWA of the same original CD but in a different drive:

(I will be updating this post)

I seem to have a problem with Bushound on this WXP system. It simply freezes on boot start with no logged errors or warnings whatsoever making it even harder to debug. I tried unloading and disabling lots of services/drivers but no luck. I will try it on a different system some time this week and see what happens but what will I be looking for anyway?

Bushound can capture the commands sent to a CDROM device and put them in a log file. By looking at the log file we might be able to work out what the protection is looking for when it verifies the original CD, so we can discover ways of fooling it.

Thanks Dr: Evil but I don't think it would be necessary anymore! It is however a VERY intresting utility I must say.

The "Unbreakable Laserlock STAR" has been broken

It basically uses physical disk characteristics (this is getting very common now days) besides ATIP and scrambling and all the rest. This is what the real problem was and therefore, a 1:1 copy is not possible yet. Daemon tools with blindsuite should also work with RMPS emulation enabled.

I used the SecurROM NEW v4 profile with Alcohol (with skip reading errors turned off for this CD since there are no readable “bad sectors”) and burned in the RMPS emulation and it seems that the CD is working so far. I reinstalled the software a few times just to double check it from the backup CD. After doing a few more careful tests, what also made the difference was the low reading and DPM sampling speeds and only my LiteOn was able to reproduce a working image. I actually used the minimum speed settings for both reading and writing. When speed was set to Max, the CD would not work all the times.

What still seems intresting about this lock are these 11 hidden files within the hdden directory that are just about the size of the CD.

That's Correct

That's great news. I will do tests soon. Aslo in the alcohol cd freaks forum they made working backups with Starforce 1/2 profile.

I doubt that this profile will work as is with this title. I think it also needs the subchannel data checked. I was only able to reproduce a working image including the subchannel but not without it. In any case, if your image works mounted then the burned CDR will work as well with RMPS emulation burned in and turned on. The Starforce also uses DPM set to normal while in SecurROM 4 DPM is set to high.

Don't forget to lower the speed. This also made a "working" difference for me

The starforce 1/2 profile works fine for me when I read the cd and then virtually mount the image. More tests coming soon.

Ok these are my final results.
I read and write the cd with the starforce profile and the backup cd works just fine. I haven't tested other profiles but maybe it is possible to make working backups with other profiles too.
Also I have to say that I didn't use a two sheep burner like liteon, asus etc. I just used an old teac w512e and the w540e. So a two sheep burner isn't required for laserlock.
Congratulation to alcohol, first to beat this new version of laserlock.

If Starforce profile worked for you as is then I guess subchannel data is not required.

Congratulations go to blindsuite as well because their images worked too. It is a nice program.

Anyway, I wonder what CloneCD is doing with these new types of locks based on CD physical info (SecurROM and Starforce). Has anyone had any success with it without emulation? Would that be possible?
