Doing something like VCDHELP.COM does for DVD players would be just the ticket. That way you would see the success rate for the various players.
As far as legality.....that is just a load of manure. If companies can validate that they will be supporting their product forever (not going out of buisness, support limits...etc) then legality would be moot. But since they cannot verify this, as well as legality of personal copies, currently they (ie software companies) have no leg to stand on (which doesn't mean they will not try). This doesn't even take into account the various issues with Linux.
Our site has fought off many a "letter of doom" from various law firms. And our stance has always been the same:

1) Can you say that the medium that your product is distributed on, will be free of defects for the life of the user?

2) Will the corporation that currently claims digital rights, to said product, proclaim lifetime support?

3) If above conditions are not met, is this declared within the user agreement and amended?

Sorry, I digress.....

Taken from Feurio's site

Footmarks: 1) This writer does not support a "Session-at-Once" recording (that means a disc-at-one Recording with leave the CD open).

2) Unfortunaty, the vendor of this writer seems not be interessted in a good support of his drive by Feurio!. We send a question to him about getting technical documentaion and/or an evaluation-drive; he does not send either.
So, it might be possible that the drive does not work correctly, especially some special functions (e.g. CD-Text, leave CD open, index-0 music) might not work correctly.
In sight of these facts, we do not recommand the use of this writer with Feurio! at this time.
Something similar to this would work

Sorry to go off track
But it always makes me think of that quote from the CIO of Autocad software: "I feel that the popularity of our software was mainly due to users passing it around. Though, illegal, it allowed the user to try the software. Once that had happened, the user was hooked and wanted the support and updates that went with the product. So I guess we owe "pirates" our claim to fame." This was of course before DEMOS were even being dreamed of.

But I do agree, I hope Ollie keeps the info. Maybe we can help by creating a user database on the success or failure rate of user drives. That way offload some of the work from Ollie....and participate in the process.

I can remember for instance Plextor denying its writers could write in RAW mode. These are all unofficial supported features and will never be advertised."

Why the manufacturers can't just say that the device can backup protected games? As far as I know here in Europe you are allowed to legally backup cd regardless of copyrights or copy protections. So if manufacturers say that they have added these features that you can backup games and at the same time loudly proclaim that they aren't made for pirating the game which is illegal how anyone could take legal procedures?
The European law is going to change by the end of this year. It might become illegal. (That's why ELBY is moving out of Europe)

even if a manufacturer claims their drives could copy protections, then they'd have to fight the courts in every country where this was illegal, and you know those macrovision *asterds would chase them til they had no more dough......and if you think the EU is bad, read the DMCA front to back. *time to go throw darts @ my sen. hollings picture*

"if you think the EU is bad, read the DMCA front to back."

As yet I have encounted no problems at all with burning safedisk 2 cd's. I did a test with amplify weak sectors turned off and it all worked fine.
Maybe I was just the lucky one.
EFM seems to be working fine.

not to be rude at all....but what the fuck did that have to do with the topic, or, more specifically, what the topic's discussion had evolved into? sorry again for the coarse language.

Where can elby move? I know, China or one of those Asian countries that has a rampant pirating problem. Wouldn't suggest the US, laws are gettin tighter.
