Confused newbie

I have XP Pro and just installed CloneCD to copy a few games for my son.

The internal XP burner has now developed problems in that it does write but at the end comes up with a IMAPI.exe error and states it did not write.

I have to manually delete the files from the folder then.

Has anybody any idea why this happens? I have searched here but not similar thread - when I remove CCD XP works again, so it's a conflict - is there a switch I need to throw?

thanks in advance.

There are two 'sticky' posts at the top of this Forum..."Settings" & "Down & Dirty".

Please read them. You are experiencing problems which are explained in those two posts. You can also search the forum to see if this has been discussed or explained in other posts.

Now, to put it bluntly, the XP built in burning proggy is crippleware & XP is not set up 'out of the box' for burning success :eek

To use any good burning proggy you must:
  • disable the built-in burning software (XP)
  • disable the IMAPi service (XP)
  • install Adaptec's ASPI 4.70 (All)
  • use UDMA33 IDE/ATAPI ROMs & burners which can busmaster or use SCSI or even FireWire (avoid PIO or Multiword DMA devices) - All
Nice to see you in the Forum and stay in touch. Now, if you'd started your post like this..."I have read the recommended settings as well as Down & Dirty..." I wouldn't have hit up this reply with the head banger One point to me & none to you

btw - don't illegally copy game titles or other software. Take a look at your country's Copyright laws & read the End User Licence Agreement, popularly known as the EULA.

Hmm full of diplomacy aren't you, pity you can't read as well as you shoot your mouth off - shit yes I know your the administrator and can bar me...

In my post I said I had searched the forum - the search engine rejects 'XP' as being to small.

I'm from the Gold Coast Qld., so no need to give me any of your 'feely good' vibes either.

Thanks anyway for your great solution.

I'm not gonna bar you - frame your next "I'm gonna copy my son's mate's game CDs" question differently

That's right, so search for Windows XP or IMAPI - my test search (which I do before shooting off my mouth) yielded the results you were after

Well, there's a little spot in your profile where you can enter your location & say things like "I love cane cutter's cordial" or "Joh for PM". If I'd known you were from Queensland I...would...have...spoken....slower....and said "eh?" a lot

My great solution is for you to read the two sticky posts where most people immediately find the answer to their problem. If you felt I was talking down to you it's because I have to hit the mark somewhere when we cater for visitors & members from all over the world.

If I spent all my the time explaining the same thing over & over & over I would not get to answer people who have actually tried to help themselves.

I'm just in the middle of reading the sticky posts.

I am member of far to many forums and get sick of filling in all the crap, I'm not a commited copier so don't plan on being here that long, aside from that, where I am from is of no consequence, only to make reference that Australians might be a little more abrupt than others.

As to copying games for my son, then you'd have some issue to bitch about if I said it was UT, Q3 or MOHAA - which I didn't. for all you or anybody else knows they are some of my old Amiga games that I want him to have for posterity.

Aside from that your obviously of the school of thought that 'guns' don't kill people, people do! so what was CloneCD created for - oh! yes that's right copying audio CD's sheesh!

Yes I did use Windows XP in the search engine no specific reference to the inbuilt xp and despite your obvious authority on the subject even in your post you give no reason why not - other than don't

For my day to day needs the inbuilt happens to be fine, and when I have done what I want to do will probably remove CCD in favour of the XP - Nero doesn't complain.

So there you have it, now aren't you glad you jumped all over my case Your not a public servant are you? that would explain a lot

LOL, I'm sorry - and I'm not a public servant! My home is actually in Everton Hills Brisbane, I'm just in Canberra for a while...

If you can topple the obstacles in the dot point advice I gave earlier, you're 96% there. Use quality, brand name media that has a speed certification on it.

Since you're an Aussie, you might be interested in our copyright laws (which are now less prohibitive then the new USA DMCA law)
Quote:
...are protected by the same federal copyright law that governs the copying of books, tapes & other intellectual property. In principle, s47C - Back-up copy of computer programs of the COPYRIGHT ACT 1968, allows the purchaser to make one copy – but before you do, take a look at s132(5B) – Offences and draw you own conclusions. Software copyright & end-user rights are further governed by the End User License Agreement, or EULA, that comes with the software. A ‘circumvention device’, in s132(5B), also means a computer program e.g. crackz & patchez (s10). Full details here Copyright Act 1968
These are my words found in various articles around these sort of forums. Apps like CloneCD don't fall into the circumvention device definition in s10 and so remain legal. If the EULA explicity prohibits a backup safety copy and the publisher/developer/owner does not offer a replacement in case of loss or damge then s47c takes precendence as does any law of the land at the time.

I'm satisfied with the laws in Australia but I don't like to offer legal advice other than sticking to making your own backups and not someone else's. Sites like this one are now legit and need to stay that way. Every now & then we 'poke' out a "don't do this" sort of remark to remind people that they won't find cracks, patches or other dubious stuff here and I know you weren't asking about that. There are plenty of other sites for that.

You can take my advice or leave it. Give me rights to my opinions & I'll give you rights to yours.

Let me know how it goes because XP can be a dog to set up for success. Once you're set-up you won't look back.

@Horze

You must disbale it from services, easy way is to go to start -> run -> type services.msc and find it in the list, right click and disable.

@djmorgan

Congrats, I think you are the rudest person I have yet to have ever seen on the forums. Since FP is very diplomatic and curtious in nature, I feel the need to say it for him.

"Hmm full of diplomacy aren't you, pity you can't read as well as you shoot your mouth off - shit yes I know your the administrator and can bar me... "
---too bad, should have barred you

"Aside from that your obviously of the school of thought that 'guns' don't kill people, people do! so what was CloneCD created for - oh! yes that's right copying audio CD's sheesh! "
---if you read more here on the forums you would have known

"I'm not a commited copier so don't plan on being here that long"
---Goood, I was scared there for a while

P.S. - You are an overall grade-A complete jerk, and I hope you curse more often so you do get barred

This thread is over a year old and you reply with a heap of dribble that does not go anywhere near the original request.

And have the nerve to dump on me... still given that it is an old post I assume your brain works at the same pace so

Oh dear we went from bad to worse

@djmorgan - can't we be courteous or are you still mad at me?

@Horze

IMAPI:

Windows XP includes support for recording CDs directly in the operating system. This is done via the Microsoft IMAPI (Image Mastering Application Programming Interface). IMAPI allows an application to burn a simple data CD or audio CD. The specific formats that are supported are Redbook audio discs, and data discs with both Joliet and ISO-9660.
