CloneCD VIA Problem?

I am running CloneCD4 (which I've been doing a few months now). I recently upgraded by system witha Soltek SL-75DRV5 mainboard and AMD Athlon XP 1800+ CPU. The mainaboard has the on board VIA AC'97 Enhanced Audio Controller (WDM).

I did a couple of CD burns recently and found that on some of the tracks the audio was distorted and there seemed to be a steady pulsing sound on the track rather like a heartbeat (that's the best way I can descibe it).

I have also done a couple of burns using Nero and these seem to be ok (so it's not hardware) leading me to wonder if there was some clash between the new system and CloneCD 4.

Browsing throught he forum topics I see there is mention of the VIA 4 in 4 Drivers. I was intending to do some more test burns to try and see what the problem was but wondered if anyone else has had the same problem and whether there is something I need to do to get CloneCD 4 working with the VIA Drivers etc. If there is a solution this could save me many hours of frustration.

Thanks

According to www.viaarena.com, it does use the VIA IDE busmaster, AGP driver, and one more. So XP basically uses three of the four drivers in the VIA 4-in-1 driver.

I'm just gonna include the below, which I post to almost everyone that has some problems remotely like this, it usually solves the problem. For your case, you can skip like the 1st and last one.

Ok, here's a few things to try, for WinXP. Well it works the same for Win2K, and the other OS can't be too different.

1. Update Nero to the newest version, 5.5.9.0 (Last Official Release), 5.5.9.6 (Leaked), or 5.5.9.9 (New Official Release, NOT Leaked Beta).

Get 5.5.9.0 Here | Mirror | Mirror | Mirror | Mirror | Mirror

Get 5.5.9.6 Here | Mirror | Mirror | Mirror

Get 5.5.9.9 Here | Mirror | Mirror | Mirror | Mirror | Mirror

2. Update your CD-RW's firmware to the newest release.

3. Go to the Control Panel, under Administrative Tools, select Services, find "IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service," then switch it to disabled from manual/automatic.

4. Go to the Control Panel, go to System. Select the Hardware tab, then go to Device Manager, then expand "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers," go to "Secondary IDE Channel," and make sure DMA is enabled, if it is already, but it says its in PIO mode then go immediately to step 5.

5 Follow step 4 to the "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers" part and delete/uninstall the "VIA Busmaster IDE Controller" (or whatever your motherboard chipset's busmaster controller is), now reboot the pc and follow step 4.

6. Your ASPI drivers may be bad, so try to use ForceASPI 1.7, and change it to 4.60, don't worry, this program has the best ASPI drivers for WinXP and makes an auto backup of your ASPI drivers so you can do a rollback.

Download it here | Find mirrors here | Get more info here

7.You might have a VIA chipset, www.viaarena.com, so if you haven't already, consider upgrading to the newest v4.42 (P2). If you have some other chipset, like Intel, please go to www.intel.com, and find the newest INF drivers release and also the Intel Application Accelerator (IAA), now v2.2.2.2150.

Download the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers here

Download the latest Intel Application Accelerator drivers here

8. Consider upgrading your BIOS

That's all I can think of for now, please test one at a time (cept 4 and 5 tho), in whatever order you want.

Oh n please post your results,

Hi Guys

Will have to study all the info at leisure to make sure I understand.

Just one point however, I should have said I'm running WME not XP. Does that make any difference?

Also, I have already installed the latest VIA 4-In-1 Drivers.

Not much really, just change some of the steps of the instruction to fit your OS. Like steps 4-5, and get rid of step 3, along with the 1st, as mentioned earlier.

Hi guys

Sorry, but I'm not sure that what you are suggesting is helping much.

I've just tried another test burn and the first track starts, then stops then starts again and from what I've listened to, I haven't gone right through the track or the other tracks on the CD, the audio seems clear although I still think the pulsating sound is there in the background but I'll have to listen more carefully to be sure.

It's really bugging me as prior to upgrading my hardware CloneCD worked fine and I've always run WME.

Logic suggests that somehow the new hardware setup is causing CloneCD a problem but that's just my way of thinking. At the moment I'm running the Memorex writer as Secondary Master with another drive as slave. I'm using an ATE33 IDE cable but I have an 80 conductor cable (ATA 66/100) due to arrive shortly as the BIOS reports there isn't one connected. Is it possible that this could be an issue?

Can you explain why I should follow item 5? I'm a bit loathe to start deleting options without knowing why and what effect they might have.

I've checked my system against item 4 but can't find any reference to DMA when I expand the secondary IDE controller option. I have checked the Memorex properties and DMA is enabled.

Hi damiandimitri

New cable now fitted. Noticed that the BIOS doesn't now show the Memorex when it detecting the drives but it does show it during the next stage of the POST when it's reporting memory etc.

It shows the Memorex as CD-RW PIO4 does this suggest an issue around the VIA Busmaster IDE Controller as mentioned earlier?

As to why I'm using CloneCD for audio. Sometimes I use CloneCD and sometimes Nero (which is a bundled version). Initially I started to use CloneCD because of the way it handles protected CDs having had problems in backing up some software with Nero.

I also looked at CD Mate but at the time it wouldn't work with my old Philips CD-RW200 ( I had both writers installed in my machine at the time but have since moved the Philips to my wife's PC) so didn't pursue it.

Nero does most of what I want it to do especially with audio, but I wanted to test both pieces of software with the new setup and it just happened that I used CloneCD first.

I've also been looking at Exact Audio Copy as I'm told this is quite good for audio, and FREE. However, I've got an issue with that too at the moment (perhaps it's linked to the CloneCD problem) in that when I tried to write a CD from an image file it got to track 7 and just stopped working-no error message-nothing at all- just the clocking ticking up time (the write LED on the Memorex didn't show any activity either). Need to have another look at that.

Hope that answers your question. If I can't get CloneCD working any suggestions for an alternative?

If I can't resolve the issue here I suppose I could always ask CloneCD Technical Support (might as well get some benefit from registering the software) if they have any suggestions.

I am going to try another burn now that the new cable is fitted and see what happens.

cdmate or blindwrite/read are good alternatives

for audio
you could also try Feurio and ofcourse EAC (download also the lame3.92 codec for mp3 in both programms)

Just looking at the latest version of CDMATE.

I installed the lame32.exe for EAC do I also need the lame3.92 codecs, do you have a link for them?

Just tried another burn with CloneCD using a new image file and new CD-RW and got the same problem i.e first tracking starts and stops a couple of times before playing. The audio is still clear.

Definitely think it has to be a problem with CloneCD as another CD I wrote a couple of days ago with nero which I did originally with CloneCD but got the problem is playing ok.

Perhaps it's just an issue with audio CDs with CloneCD and adat would be ok?

Hi PM received. There is a reply for you.

I'd still like to sort out the problem with CloneCD if I can as it was working ok before I did the hardware upgrade.
