Another Person with WC3 troubles...

OK, I have WC3 ripped successfully (Checked it with D-Tools with no Emulation), yet when I try to burn the Image, it always asks for CD. I have a Lite-On 32123S drive with latest firmware. I've used both the Lite-On SecureRom (NEW) Profile, as well as the regular old SecureRom profile, and neither have worked. I also have "Hide CDR Media" checked.

Am I missing something?

I really can't see how you could have problems coping WC3 it is an extremely easy game to copy, unless you haven't got the right CloneCD settings or something. I burned it successfully with my Ricoh MP7120A 12x10x32.

Here are the settings i used.

Read Settings
Data Read Settings
Read Speed: x20
Read SubChannel Data from Data Tracks: ticked
Regenerate Data Sectors: ticked

Audio Reading Settings

Audio Extraction Quality: Best (Slowest)
Read SubChannel Data from Audio Tracks: ticked
Only read the first Session: unticked

Write Settings
Amplify Weak Sectors: unticked
Don't Repair Subchannel Data: ticked

I've tried that, and it doesn't work, which is why I'm asking here =D The IMG ripped from the CD works fine since it works in D-Tools, but I can't seem to burn it correctly.

Are you sure you made a succesful copy? This might be a longshot but did you burn with hide-cdr media running? That can sometimes mess up the burn causing it not to run.

Looks like I have a successful copy. The Fix? I checked "Don't repair Subchannel Data". Both SecureRom (LiteOn and Original) do not have this checked by default, so I guess they aren't good profiles ;\

They are good profiles and "Don't repair Subchannel Data" shouldn't be required. However, WCIII often produces peculiar and, at times, inexplicable results, particularly with Lite-on writers. ("Regenerate Data Sectors" shouldn't be required and shouldn't do anything anyway BUT is often both necessary and effective to obtain a good image, especially with the Ltr-24102b).

I keep reading other people saying this and keep trying -- my stack of coasters continues to grow. I also have a disk image that works without emulation, but I can't seem to burn the thing successfully (with an GCE 8160B). I'll try these settings, although I'm not optimistic. OTOH, because the disk image works, I can run the game without using the CD.

Off topic, I was concerned about a backup because I'd lost 4 CDs in two months, on different CD drives, all due to cracking (one destroyed itself inside the drive, which somehow survived). I finally figured out what was going on -- it was the &*%#ing double CD jewel cases I was using. They have a certain rigid hub design that puts too much stress on the CD hub, which causes the cracking. I found about 6 more originals that were starting to crack -- fortunately, all are backed up and safely stored away (not in jewel cases). There's a moral here somewhere.

If you've got a good image but can't burn it correctly, you may be out of luck.

However, you might try the new program alcohol 120% with which I have been able to make working copies of WCIII (of course, I can also do so with clonecd so this may not mean much). You can get a trial version from the Downloads page of CDR Times .

The program also includes emulation functions so even if you can't get a perfect copy, you can probably get an imperfect copy to work by enabling securerom emulation. Further, it also has a function like that of clonecd to hide the atip of a copy so you can play a back-up from your writer.

alcohol 120%

hey philamber,

i just downloaded Alcohol 120% and tried making an image of WC3, but it gave me a "Disc read error at : 323568".
did you get this while reading the disc??

does securom *new* use unreadable sectors like safedisc?

the image mounts and works, but wat's up with the error...

thanks!

a little more testing...

The original disc can't be damaged as i checked with nero's scan disc and it was perfect.
funny thing is if i use a backup to make an image with alcohol there is no read error, after that i tried clonecd with the original and it never mentioned any read error.
but each time i read the original with alcohol it gives me this error.

here are the logs:

Hi aggybong

I placed an earlier post explaining how I copied WC3 - I used CCD v3.3.4.1

I decided to waste more valuable time on it and came up with the following results, settings are as per secure-rom profile.

Read with CCD v4.0.1.10 - write with v4.0.1.10 - no good

Read with v4 - write with v3 - good

Read with v3 - write with v4 - no good

Read with v3 - write with v3 - good

So, the problem appears to be with using v4 to write with?
As I asked earlier, can someone explain why v3 writes ok but v4 doesn't? I'm stuffed if I know.

(I've made numerous copies, btw, to prove it's not a one-off).

ciao,
dik.

@ webcrawler
WCIII shouldn't have any bad sectors and, apparently, your copy doesn't (if clonecd is any guide). It would seem to be a case of a phantom error being reported since the copy made with alcohol doesn't have the error (as it should have done if the error were really there and the image were burned correctly). Why alcohol should disclose a phantom read error near the very end of the cd, I've no idea but it should be remembered that it's still in beta development (though I'm told that retail version will be released in the next week or two).

@ dik
Weird results. Maybe olli or sheepfriend could explain it if you sent them the details. I certainly can't (though this version of securerom new does seem to produce weird and inexplicable results, particularly with Litey writers).
