Am I The Only Newbie Who Feels Like Throwing Their Reader & Writer Out the Window?

Firstly please dont move this thread, ill get to CloneCD in a bit!

LG CD-ROM CRD-8522B (52x)
LG CD-RW CED 8080B (8x 4x 32x)

TDK 74mins

Windows 2000 Pro.

PII 350 64Megs

Im sure im not the only newbie who is having more than trouble (understatement there) with copying cd's! i even fkuced up an audio cd just now!! here is the whole story!

It all started when i got my LG CD-RW, and the software i got was Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4 (All clever people think "here we go" well ur right, here we go!) and being at that point a total new to burning, software was software in my book. So on goes the software and cd's and cd's of happy burning, never had a prob burning a data (mp3 and apps) couple of CD Copier audio's, no trouble either, at that point i was running Win 98SE over what i have now.

It all went wrong when a friend asked me to copy my worms armageddon cd, being a twat, i put the cd in the reader, the blank in writer, and went into copy cd, hit copy, and it wouldnt, serveral cd's got wasted in this excursion. i asked a clever guy in a chatroom and he pointed me to www.gamecopyworld.com, and taught me how to use ClonyXL (i speak no german, so XXL is of no use), but XL wouldnt load without some ASPI drivers installed, so blind old me goes and wacks on some ASPI drivers from GCW.com, XL loads, the first disc i copied (still dunno if it worked coz i havent seen the guy since, nice ay) was Worms Arm, had SafeDisc (i think) on it, used CloneCD and made a copy. woohoo! (if only)

Next time i wanted to make a Data cd, i load Ez CD and it wouldnt find my burner, said the bugger didnt exist, tried everything, refused to achnowlage its existance, installed and uninstalled and reinstalled millions of times! nothing.

The PC was a total mess due to many reasons (called sisters) so it needed to be formatted, so it was. Total format, Win 98 SE (Offical CD Not a copy) put back on, i put Ez back straight away, so the whole PC consisted of my hardware, Windows and Ez, and it stilled didnt find my burner, im like what?? Tried everything again and nothing, i tried MANY different softwares including Nero and none of them worked properly, all just either didnt work or made a mess on the CD.

Total reformat again, even removed the master partian, and then put on Windows 2000 Pro, and then as there was nothing, windows formatted it again in NTS (summit like that) file system, so the bugger even got two formats. Started it all up, put back on Ez and still didnt find my burner, so took it off and left it off! i got Nero again and had a good play with it and made a sucessful data cd!! (thro mini-party at this point)

Now came the copying again! put back on XL and CloneCD and the ASPI to boot (incase u think the ASPI is causing all this, ive got a screen shot at the bottom), so the horror of the Unreal Tournament CD is now upon me. It has SafeDisc on it, so i put it in clony, well i typed all this from another thread, ill copy it in: (FutureProof and Gamefreak have been helping me, cheers guys )

----(Extract From "Help a Newbie" Thread)

ive also had trouble coping my Unreal Tournament CD. What i do is go into ClonyXL, and click scan CD, it comes up with Safedisc, so i click CloneCD and it loads CloneCD, i click on copy CD, enter all the information (according to the Settings Sticky thread) and when it finally goes to read the cd...it doesnt. the read light on my CD-ROM goes like the clappers but the session % meter doesnt move, at all. It doesnt read if i use my burner instead, ive altered the read speeds like said above but none make a difference, it doesnt make a difference if i use Write to Imagine file either.

That problem is still here, but this one really takes the piss! my sister asked me to copy a double audio cd, it needed 80mins so i got 80mins. i opened Nero and Wizard > Copy CD, selected the according and click burn, did it? did it fuck! it fannied around analyzing the CD, got to 49%, and then never moved again, infact the whole pc crashed (Took the Uncrashable Win 2k Pro with it), it took the mouse out so when that goes u no its a gonner!

So i decided to copy it with CloneCD instead, opened it, click CloneCD, went thro all the stuff, i set it to "On The Fly" mode (thats what i used to in Ez Copier) and set the wriite speed to 4x, (8x messes up on on the fly mode coz 'apparntly' the data lead between reader and writer cant handle 8x) and 20mins later (all looks well) the cd is made, i open cd player, play track one, it plays, play track two, it doesnt! nor 3,4,5,6,7, etc.. so it only burned track one, the rest was blank! but come to mention it, i only recall my reader light flashing for about 2mins, and then didnt again, which i thought was odd as it was on the fly but left it anyway! so i cant even copy audio cd's let alone protected ones!!! ive had all this saga for the past say 4 months? great fun when ur burner is brand new!

Ive been told by someone on here that my LG's are just crap basically! lol! but the reader installs apps from cd's and plays games fine, and my burner was fine on that data in Nero and fine for months in Ez, so..?

Just incase you think ASPI is the prob (whatever ASPI actually is anyway, summit to do with layers?), heres my ASPI check:

well i just had to get all that off my chest, am i the only person to have such trouble with my roms?

This is the only area i cant work, im not thick with comps, ive got cable net coz i use it alot, i use irc scripts, ftps (like above), fluent in Photoshop, all sorts, but this i might aswel be a turtle!

Someone must be as thick as me, please, tell me im not alone!!!!

lol! -coup

I'm on it. But it will take me some time to put the answer together. You didn't Ghost your HDD by any chance?

An off-topic reply but great story I wish all problems were such great reading!

FutureProof is on it but some tips from me:

- Easy CD Creator 4 and Win2k is a no-go as you discovered.
-Don't copy on-the-fly with CloneCD. First make an image, check your log file for possible errors, then write the image. This way you won't waste as much CD-R's.
-ClonyXL isn't great. Use the translated ClonyXXL instead. You can get this from http://insomnia.covers.de. This one works a lot better.

  • Read the Settings & Down & Dirty Sticky Posts (again!)
  • Decide on an OS! Or go dual boot. Install 98 first; then Win2K on another partition & XP on another again. Use the default paths for the install of all proggys to C. Win98SE is unbeatable for gaming & burning.
  • NT, Win2K & XP have issues...UDMA/ATA & ASPI - it's in the Stickies
  • Don't install the Adaptec Plugin for Windows Media Player
  • Nero & EZ CD will not co-exist if you install both Packet Writing Drivers - only one PWD per OS!
  • EZ CD - good for backing up data & packet writing. Nero is better. Just pick one of them.
  • Got room for another ATAPI optical device? Buy one of the SD2 killers mention in the Stickies. Use the **ahem - cough** CED 808B as a Packet Writer - bung in a CD-RW disc and leave it there. Store you CV, hardware drivers, CD serials & keys, official updates/patches etc, there. It will install games and play them, yes; but burning is a serious matter as you have discovered.
  • Get ASPI 4.70 from Adapatec. Install...boot...then re-install again. Run ASPICHK - four files, just like the img you posted.
  • Some game titles need an 80' CD-R - it's in the Stickies
  • I too have a PII 350 on an ABIT BE6, in a test box; it does the job with 160 MB of RAM, but 64 MB RAM?!...puh-leeze! Buy some PC133, preferably a stick of 256 MB and bung that in. RAM is so cheap it should be against the law.
  • Go to c;\windows\system\iosubsys and look for torisan, omega & scsi1hlp vxd files. Read this to work out what to do about them and more like them - DON'T delete them!
Buy Norton Ghost or Powerquest's Drive Image. 'Ghost up' after a fresh install with a few goodies loaded. My Ghost Image has:
  • Win98SE installed, disc image and disc files copied to c;\win98\options\98se_disc (change the SourcePath in the registry to c;\win98\options\98se_disc\cabs)
  • Lots of patches : the IEEE1394 patch from MS for one; IE6 installed & patched, DUN & ISP, my network, Nero, EAC, Feurio!, CloneCD, MS Office patched & setup, ASPI
  • blah blah blah - anything else, as long as it's setup, customised, patched & stable.
This would save a lot of time, eh? Stay in touch

grrr!!!

Ok get another stuff up by me! i read all the pages u pointed me to, and what u wrote, and basically i:

My pc is fresh and no need to format, i have decided on an OS (Windows 2000 Pro) my pc has no actual Roxio software on it.

I did have ForceASPI On here (4.60), but i KilledASPI and rebooted, ASPI Check and had nothing, downloaded 4.70 and installed it, rebooted, installed it again and rebooted (sounds strange but thats what u wrote..didnt u? oh well, makes no difference).

Ive got ClonyXXL and setup the options according to what u said in the SafeDisc1 settings, (DAO-RAW blah blah).

After all this i took it for another test drive, XXL dected the SafeDisc1, and i clicked Clone. CloneCD loads, i setup the options according to what u said in previous threads in places, didnt copy on the fly, and hit go, the progress window came up and i left it, and went and used the phone. Came back atleast 10mins later and had made no progress what-so-ever, (% Meter on 0).

One of my flaws i have is my RAM, having 64megs and running Win 2k Pro isnt clever i know, but it works the pc, but in XXL my ram usage is 56/64, which leaves 8 megs free which is absolutly stupid, so 256 megs of RAM i will be purchasing very soon, but ive got more important money to pay out first tho. As i already have 64 megs, would a 128 chip surfice? (128 + 64 = 192) so would 192 be ok for a win 2k user? basically i use apps, odd game, (not many) and mp3's!

Thanks for everything you and gamefreak have done upto now, shame the bugger still aint working, but this little lot should keep you busy for a little longer

-coup

edit: i just thought id remind you, remember that Worms Armageddon CD i made, that (original CD) has SafeDisc on it, and i made a perfect working copy from that (i rang the guy and asked him, said its fine) so whats the problem when it copies one safedisc cd but not another?

-coup

edit 2: i just tried to copy that Worms cd i did before, and it all froze up and took the mouse with it, so why wont it copy it when its done it before? (Copied on Win 98 SE). i really feel like doing the title now!
