Problems with DVD+R DL burn

Hello all. First post and new to DVD burning.

Installed a Pioneer DVR-115D few weeks ago and have been burning using Nero 8 (on trial) using 4.7gb Verbatim with no problems. Didnt like Nero, to bloated, so installed ImgBurn. Tried to backup some files (mainly jpegs with a couple of avi) onto new 2.4x verbatim DVD+R DL disc with Imgburn, thought burn was ok until i went to check the disc. Computer says that the disc has ~6.3gb on it but when you open it there are no files to been seen on the disc, like they are hidden.

With ImgBurn i used Build setting with auto speed and only changed the default so that more than 8 directory levels were allowed as i have a few subfolders with jpegs in them.

Can anyone see what i am doing wrong as these discs are a bit pricey to have to many as coasters...

Thank you in advance.

Re: Problems with DVD+R DL burn

I doubt that has to do with Imgburn, more likely there is a driver/virtual drive installed that produces that issues.

Re: Problems with DVD+R DL burn

Thanks for the reply chef.

Just tried to do a quick burn with a RW verbatim and even though burn process seemed to work, once in my computer there was no sign of a disc being in the D: dvd drive?

Got the latest driver for the Pioneer (Version 1.18). Any idea how i would test to see if it was a virtual driver causeing me problems?

Re: Problems with DVD+R DL burn

You had 'Test Mode' enabled for the RW so nothing would have actually been written to the disc.

Re: Problems with DVD+R DL burn

Just carried a quick test burn on a new RW and that worked fine (with test mode unchecked).

I dont think that would have been the problem for the DL DVD though as data (although hidden) has been burned onto the disc, would it?

Again thanks for all who have posted.

Re: Problems with DVD+R DL burn

Well for the DL disc, it appears to burn and verify ok so *something* must be on it.

Take a look at the disc in IsoBuster or something and see if it can read the file system properly.

Re: Problems with DVD+R DL burn

Just used IsoBuster and the DL disc opens in this program. Opens up into two subfolders one for ISO and the other UDF. Extracted a jpg from one of the ISO subfolders and it worked fine. I wonder why IsoBuster can open the DL disc but 'My computer' cannot?

Re: Problems with DVD+R DL burn

Do you have autoinsert disabled or anything?

I assume you've tried just rebooting the PC?!

Re: Problems with DVD+R DL burn

Yes rebooted at the time, no difference. The DL disc autoplays opening and informing you of the total GB on the disc. The main folder name off the disc opens, its just when you enter this main folder no more folders are seen.

I have never advertently disabled autoinsert.

Just had a look at this post

re-enable auto insert

My binary data is set to 0000 91 00 00 00.

So this looks like it is set to disabled then. Should i follow the previous post and change it to 0000 95 00 00 00? Editing the Reg is a bit of a grey area for me.

Re: Problems with DVD+R DL burn

In imgburn go to tools, settings, device, make sure under "operating system options" that the box for "auto insert notification" is checked. Do not need to make registry changes the program will.

Has the disk been finalised? Post a log of your "successful" DL burn please.

Re: Problems with DVD+R DL burn

When you open 'My Computer' and open the drive with that disc in, what EXACTLY do you see? Is there just an empty window or do you see the folders but you can't then go into them?

Have you tried creating a new image from the same files to see if it happens again? You can just build an ISO and then mount it in DAEMON Tools to test it, there's no need to burn another disc.

If you could create an image of the disc, cut the first 5mb into it's own file and email / upload it somewhere then I'll take a closer look at it.

There must be some sort of file system problem if Windows won't parse it and that 5mb should contain everything I need.

Re: Problems with DVD+R DL burn

When i open the DVD drive in 'My computer' it shows a folder named 'documents and settings' and when i check the files properties it shows it contains 39 files with over 5.8GB of data. When i open this folder it goes to the next screen with no folders present.

Re: Problems with DVD+R DL burn

Ok and so how about trying to recreate the issue by making a new ISO and examining it via DAEMON Tools or whatever?

What are the exact settings you used in the main 'Options' tab in Build mode?

i.e. Preserve Full Pathnames, Recurse Subdirectories etc.

Re: Problems with DVD+R DL burn

Just used IsoBurn to write the file to my desktop. Opened this new Iso file with DAEMON tools lite and it opened faultlessly.

When i burned originally to DL DVD the only setting i recall altering were to allow more than 8 levels.

Unsure how to do the following:-

"If you could create an image of the disc, cut the first 5mb into it's own file and email / upload it somewhere then I'll take a closer look at it"

do you mean the Iso image?

Again thanks for looking.

Re: Problems with DVD+R DL burn

So the new image you just created was based on the exact same set of files?

As for getting me 5mb of the image, put the dodgy DL in the drive, go into 'Read' mode and create an image of it on your hdd. Then you can use a hex editor or file splitting program to get 5mb from the start of the image.

You can also use IsoBuster (which you've already said you have). Right click on the top level item in the treeview on the left (probably says DVD or something) and then click 'Extract From-To'.

Select the 'Length' option and type in 2560.

Then select 'User Data' and click 'Start Extraction'.

That should work direct from disc or from an image file.

Re: Problems with DVD+R DL burn

Ok, I'm not sure 5mb was enough for the full file system (the first file starts at 4377 so I'm ~1800 short) but I did notice one thing... the folder inside 'Documents and Settings' is marked with the 'hidden' attribute. (I only see 1 folder 'Cr*** B*****.CR***')

Is your OS configured to show hidden files?

Re: Problems with DVD+R DL burn

Configuring the OS to read hidden files has just resolved the 'problem'.

In the OP i mentioned that the files seemed 'hidden' so originally I checked the 'hidden' attributes in the DVD subfolder to see if that would enable me to view all hidden folders on the DL DVD, it didnt so i thought it was something else.

Any ideas what I did wrong to make the files appear hideden when i did the original burn?

Again many thanks for all your help.

Re: Problems with DVD+R DL burn

That 'Cr*** B*****.CR***' folder must be hidden on your hdd for some reason.

I'm guessing you just dropped one of the later folders (i.e. My Pictures) in ImgBurn's 'Source' box but had 'Preserve Full Pathnames' checked as an option.

The program has then gone through the parent folders and copied their attributes to the extra folders that get created.

Perhaps on your second attempt at burning you didn't have that 'Preserve Full Pathnames' option set and you just ended up with a 'My Pictures' folder in the root of the disc - which wasn't hidden.
