Re: ImgBurn 2.4.1.0 "Verify" error - discs dodged?

Hmm....

Your log does not state OS and ImgBurn version, and your burner (same model as mine) seems to be connected via USB.

Apart from that, the correct identification of the disc AFTER burning is the same what i get when using the OLD ImgBurn version. So i guess that in my particular setup the newer version burns something onto the disc which dupes the burner to "detect" it as a DVD+RW.

Or how else can a DVD+R become a DVD+RW during the burn process?

Nevertheless, i have it working again, old version, no support ok i can live with that (never needed support before apart from the occasional question here)......

By the way i DID try a whole bunch of DVD's yesterday in the burner to check if there is ANYthing wrong with it - some 2-3 year old "Princo" DVD-R's (1-4x and 1-8x variants), old Verbatim DVD-R's, old and new Verbatim DVD+R's (8x and 16x variants), genuine movie DVD's, copycat movie DVD's.... ALL read fine in the burner - EXCEPT for the few i burned with ImgBurn 2.4.1.0.

So my personal conclusion: Bug in 2.4.1.0. Drive = ok.

Best regards.....

Thanh

Forgot to mention - the few DVD's i created with that version are NOT "coasters", they are just unreadable by the burner but work fine in any other drive. And that bug, whatever it is, maybe only comes out when using Vista Ultimate 32bit with an AMD processor and the burner being connected via IDE....... strange things DO happen.

Re: ImgBurn 2.4.1.0 "Verify" error - discs dodged?

The OS doesn't come into it. I'm talking to the drive, not your OS. Drives have a set of commands (set out in the MMC specs) that you use and they're constant.
I ran out of IDE ports so it's going via an IDE -> USB adapter.
My version is 2.4.1.2 but I've not done anything that would fix this - because there's nothing to fix.

The fact stands, if it was a 'bug' it would be there for everyone... and quite simply, it's not.

You've got nothing to lose by just trying 2.4.1.0 with that 'DVD+R Reserve Track' option unticked on the next disc you'll be burning anyway.

Hell, you can probably even just enable it in 2.3.2.0 if you want. It'll tell me the same thing either way.

Re: ImgBurn 2.4.1.0 "Verify" error - discs dodged?

The only way that it could be tricked into being an RW is if the leadin was written incorrectly and byte 0 was messed up. But this is not an ImgBurn thing - therefore, it is not an ImgBurn "bug".

You can go on all you like about this, but you are the only person we know experiencing this. Now, being sensible, don't you think we'd have a lot more queries if it was a software issue? It's a hardware thing, possibly indicative of the drive going west.

As well, USB is not a factor. And your implication that LUK somehow wrote his test disk with an earlier version and omitted it from his log is pejorative. Conclude all you like; you are simply trying to be provocative.

You are simply an asshole.

I never said that LUK had used an earlier version, do not put words in my mouth ok?

I have a problem here that started the moment i started using a specific version of a given software and ended the moment i STOPPED using that version, and all you can do is blame my hardware.

Shows you know NOTHING of what you are talking about.

If you have nothing constructive to say, shut the f*** up.

I'll try the DVD+R reverse track thing next time i'll burn something but in two weeks time i'll be on Linux anyway.

Nice forum here. All one gets is misleading info.

Bye.

Thank you... all I wanted you to do was try it.

btw ImgBurn will still be available to you on Linux via 'Wine'

Re: ImgBurn 2.4.1.0 "Verify" error - discs dodged?

Hello.

@LUK my rant ("asshole") was NOT against YOU but the other guy who told lies about me, something i can't stand. Please don't misunderstand me.

I will sure try th method you mentioned but i don't want to burn another disc just for this test - i have only three left now, already burned one yesterday for testing sake only which is useless - works, but i can't use it for anything.

@NightTran What has me being Vietnamese got to do with my burner being blamed for an error clearly caused by a piece of software and subsequently me being accused of things i didn't do or say? And if you think 200 Euros in Thailand is like "a king", yes, up country on a farm maybe but not in central Bangkok where 200 Euros is pretty much lowest level. That's 10.000 Baht - i earn 12.000 actually, per month that is. Oh and i pay 6.000 rent for my 25 sqm one-room apartment, and a 50-spindle of Verbatim DVD+R costs 750 Baht. Just to give you an idea how "a king" lives here. Before you are tempted to join blutach in distributing further BS about stuff you know nothing about.

Regards, and good night

Re: ImgBurn 2.4.1.0 "Verify" error - discs dodged?

Thanks for that Arachne and I will restrain myself from responding. I am sure Thanh-BKK simply enunciated what many feel, anyway

What I will say to Thanh-BKK is that no info here is misleading. You come on with a problem and self-diagnose it, despite people who really know what they are talking about, including the author of the software, actually giving you good info. Open your mind, stop the emotional rubbish (no-one is telling lies about you) and just consider you have a drive that isn't quite right (as we have tried to figure out ways that you may have been correct - the fact that we can't means it's a hardware issue and Arachne's links give me further confidence in this area).

Regards

Re: ImgBurn 2.4.1.0 "Verify" error - discs dodged?

Good morning.

Interesting read on those links. I myself thought of a hardware problem initially (again, hence my topic in first place) but WHY does the problem NOT occur when i use the older ImgBurn version?? THAT is what makes me think it can only be with the software.

I DID use one of those tools mentioned a longer time ago to reset some stuff in the drive (can't remember when exactly that was, back then i had the problem of getting coasters when burning the then-new 16x Verb's at 4x, i was advised that those won't handle that speed and i should go 8x, never had that problem since) but yeah, the current problem started with the very first disc burned by ImgBurn 2.4.1.0 and now, as i am back on the older version (granted - only a single one disc tested) seems to be gone again. This fact seems to be conveniently overlooked by everyone - so i state it in an extra paragraph:

Problem present in newer ImgBurn version. Problem NOT present in older ImgBurn version, even AFTER the failure with the newer and reverting BACK to the older.

So IF there is something messed up in the drive itself, could it be that ImgBurn 2.3.2.0 just ignores whatever error that is in the drive and just keeps on chugging, while the newer 2.4.1.0 requires this particular "thing" inside the drive to function 100%? If that is the case, still (at least for me) the older version is better.

I currently have no spare $$ to go and buy a new burner "just because" and RMA is no option - we get only 6 months warranty for these things and the drive is older than that.

And regarding the software author being present, while i appreciate it dearly i also have the experience that software authors tend to blame just about anything in the world for failures of their software except the simple fact that there is a bug in their program. While just about every piece of software (including firmware) most certainly has bugs, the creators of such software often simply refuse to accept that and blame everything from weak PSU's to the earth's rotation for the resulting errors.

I have now re-installed 2.4.1.0 and wil;l disable the mentioned setting, then burn a disc to see what happens. Will let you know.

Best regards......

Thanh

You mean to say that you only burned one test disc on 2.3.2.0? If so, you were lucky.

And please - comparing LUK to other software authors who blame eveything except their product is just plain libelous. Examine the price you paid for ImgBurn ($0) versus the thousands of hours LUK has put in to it, not to mention the support he gives, also for free (try getting that from Ner0 or R0xi0).

Re: ImgBurn 2.4.1.0 "Verify" error - discs dodged?

Hello again.

Burned TWO discs with 2.4.1.0 now - the option "DVD+R reserve track" WAS already unchecked after installation (!)

Both discs burned AND VERIFIED fine and are perfectly readable.

Conclusion: Installing 2.4.1.0 over 2.3.2.0 screwed *something* (as every single one burned since then showed the problem), installing 2.3.2.0 over it and then 2.4.1.0 over AGAIN seems to have fixed "it" whatever "it" was.

Reminds me of uTorrent - every version since 1.70beta has a bug where the settings DAT files become corrupted, resulting in all sorts of strange errors. Reverting to an older version and then back to the latest fixes it.

Re: ImgBurn 2.4.1.0 "Verify" error - discs dodged?

Hmm seeing those logs.......

After the burn, the first one (second log) shows all supported speeds while the second disc (first log) only goes to "8x".

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

I'll stick to the old version, screw this.

Re: ImgBurn 2.4.1.0 "Verify" error - discs dodged?

Yes, I think its on the way out. My old drive exhibited this sort of erratic behaviour as it was dying a slow death (slower than it should have been as I stupidly tried to hang onto it for as long as possible). The drive showed good burns but bad verifies but the disks were "OK" - the reader was failing.

I predict that you'll see more strange behaviour over the next few months before it finally gives up the ghost.

But at least you have now proved that it isn't an ImgBurn issue. 2.4.1 works fine.

Regards

Yes.... because the damn things cost money which doesn't grow on trees (maybe it does where you live but definitely not HERE). Plus why would i need a second one anyway? I don't even have space for a second one in my PC (no bay AND no free IDE channel).

So i'll get a new burner when i get my next paycheck and along with it the required HDD for Linux and a new pack of Verbatims.

You may close the topic now, problem temporarily solved (by reverting to old version).

Regards

You could replace your reader with a burner. (Or change your signature)

Re: ImgBurn 2.4.1.0 "Verify" error - discs dodged?

Hi.

Yup i *could* replace the reader with a burner. Then i had two burners. For what? So that, should there be a problem, everyone could tell me "the problem is because you have two burners"?

I have read that, to PLAY a DVD, a burner drive should not be used because it wears them out quickly. And that is exactly what i wish to prevent - for one i hate to take my computer apart (as that indeed increases the risk of "cable" related failures) and also these things, as i mentioned, cost money. That reader drive is with me since an eternity and still functions perfectly while in that same time i have gone thru 3 burners.....

1) A Samsung CD burner. I was advised a problem was "hardware related" and changed it. Problem was still present, the burner still works today, 4 years later, in another computer (the 5th computer that drive is in). The problem was a dodgy update in Roxio-software.

2) A LiteOn DVD burner. Started generating coasters after upgrading to Vista. Again i was advised it is "a hardware problem" and i got a new one (the current one). Again the old burner still works happily under XP in my boss' computer because AGAIN the hardware was NOT at fault - but Nero (respectively it's incompatibility with Vista - it's been blamed on my media (Princo), my cables, my HDD and of course the burner but not on Nero which actually WAS the problem).

3) My current LiteOn DVD burner which, yet again, is being blamed for problems that suddenly appeared after a software upgrade.

Maybe someone here is willing to understand WHY i don't believe in this "it's your drive" stuff anymore?

Best regards.....

Thanh

Speaking of them, have you checked your cables?

I have been watching this thread and all I can say is some of the best have tried to help you. You seem to be sure that there advice and or suggestions are not valid. If you truly believe that then maybe you should find help some other place.

One last thought, are you overclocking your rig?
