ImgBurn 2.4.1.0 "Verify" error - discs dodged?

Hello

I am burning a number of data-DVD's, and ever since i updated ImgBurn to the latest version i am getting "I/O Error!" when the verifying process starts, the disc subsequently appears empty to the burner but reads just fine in the (separate) DVD reader drive.

Specs:

CPU: AMD Sempron 2800++ OC'ed to 2.000 MHz (stock 1,600 MHz)
RAM: 2 GB Kingston DDR 400 (2x 1 GB)

OS: Vista Ultimate 32bit
ImgBurn version 2.4.1.0

Writer: Lite-On LH20A1, FW KL0N, IDE slave channel 2 (DMA enabled)
Media: Verbatim DVD+R 16x (MCC-004-00)
Burn speed: 8x

For the error, please see attached screenshot picture. I never had this happen with the older ImgBurn version 2.3.something and i am very tempted to go back to that version.

Is this, as i suspect, some sort of bug in this ImgBurn version or is my burner on the way out? As mentioned, the DVD's work fine in another drive.

Also, ever since i installed this ImgBurn version, both (!) my DVD drives will not open the first time i press the button, they appear locked (even after just booting the computer). I have to wait for the light to go off and then press the button again for them to open. Maybe related?

Can someone advice me what to do? Go back to the old version? Wait for newer?

Best regards.....

Thanh

Is there anything else unusual in the log? Please post a copy of it.

You might just have a dud batch of discs. Check your DMA.

Hello

Can you please advise me on how/where to find the "log"?

DMA is fine, already checked, no problems with that. The error comes with EVERY DVD that i burn, ever since i got that new ImgBurn version. Previously i used up about 10 or 15 of the spindle (50-pack) without problem, so i doubt the discs are to blame.

Again, they read fine and without problem in the in the normal DVD drive.

Best regards......

Software doesn't make your drive produce bad burns or make it any less capable of reading discs.

Logs can be found via the 'Help' menu -> 'ImgBurn Logs'.

You should try keeping the log window open (via the 'View' menu) at all times as it contains important / interesting information.

Hello

Easy to jump to conclusions - would it help when i say that i had the machine overclocked since, err, a year? And the problem only occurred since, err, a few days, to be precise since i installed the new ImgBurn after i got fed up of it's constant nagging to upgrade?

Thanks for the hint where to find the log, i am not the "uber geek" who burns professionally or something, i just always collect so much data that my partition for that purpose fills and once it's full i burn the whole shebang to a stack of DVD's and start the cycle from new...... and, as mentioned, never had issues like this before.

Will check and post the log once i am at home (still at the office now).

Best regards......

If you don't want the constant nagging ( only updated three times in a year) disable autocheck for updates in options...

FYI only the current version of the program is supported.

Re: ImgBurn 2.4.1.0 "Verify" error - discs dodged?

The appearance of problems after installing latest version of ImgBurn can be only a coincidence.

A possibility is that your hard disc is beginning to fail, so I suggest to run a checkdisc. For what i know, each HDD manufacturer have a specific tool to check their drives that is freely available from the website.

Alternatively, you can use the chkdisc tool embedded in Windows.

Another test you can do is to buy some new cables, because also a damaged cable can give these errors.

Another thing that can cause this problem is a buggy IDE driver (for example, it happened to me and to many people when using nVidia IDE drivers). You can try to uninstall IDE drivers and reboot, letting Windows install the standard Microsoft IDE drivers, that are fully working in most of systems.

I hope that this can help

And, err... constant nagging implies you have not updated. The, errr... idea is to update - there are many, errr... important fixes, as well as, errr... new features. And, errr... as LOCO said, errrr... (see how annoying this sarcastic style of yours is?) we only support the, errr..... latest version.

Errr... regards

Hi

Going home now and will check things once there. About this updating - i am not a person who always needs the "latest and greatest", if something works exactly the way it should i just want to keep it that way.

But then every time i used ImgBurn it came up with "New version is available, do you want to upgrade" and at some stage i had enough of that and clicked "yes".

And the problem started.

I will check my logs and stuff and post them here (i don't believe it to be the cables or IDE drivers, the latter being Microsoft originals anyway - yes, it's an Nvidia nForce chipset but those drivers didn't work well (LAN!) so i had Vista use it's own and all was well..... also the cables, they were new when i built the machine last year and i never took it apart since, so no movement on those cables that could somehow break them... of course, i appreciate the information.... let's see the log first, then i'll try the older version again (hope i still have it.......) and see if the problem persists - if not, now i know how to disable update checks

If yes.... umm.......... maybe get a new burner........ or something (i'll switch to Linux soon anyway).

Best regards.......

Thanh

Re: ImgBurn 2.4.1.0 "Verify" error - discs dodged?

Tools → Settings → Events and change frequency of checking for updates to monthly.

But do look at the changelog - there's lots of bugfixes (yes even LUK! has the odd bug!! wot?), so old versions are not working "exactly as they should be".

Anyway, do not expect support for old versions.

Regards

Re: ImgBurn 2.4.1.0 "Verify" error - discs dodged?

The constant nagging is caused by 3rd party tools that use the program and force the program not to save the settings. The program then doesn't update when it last checked for updates and so will check each time it loads rather than every 2 weeks (which is what it defaults to).

About the mentioned "third party software that uses ImgBurn", i don't think i have any such on the PC.... i use ImgBurn exclusively as my only burning application because it is free of all the bloat found in others.

I will now revert to the older version which i still have and see if it still works.

Will let you know once done.

Best regards......

Oh, and i tested the "dodgy" DVD's created by the 2.4.1.0 version - they also read fine in my boyfriend's laptop (combo drive), so i guess they are safe - only my burner still refuses to read those, which is weird.

So there must be a bug in ImgBurn 2.4.1.0 which prevents it to function correctly under Vista 32bit with my particular burner.

I'll stick to this old version now, it asked me during install if i want it to check for updates periodically and i told it "no, thanks".

With kind regards.......

your Thanh

Re: ImgBurn 2.4.1.0 "Verify" error - discs dodged?

Something is amiss with the 2.4.1.0 log...

Quote:
I 10:17:53 Source Media Type: DVD+RW (Book Type: DVD-ROM) (Disc ID: MCC-004-00) (Speeds: 4x)
Your media is reported as only supported of 4X...and is being reported as DVD+RW after the burn.

While the older version support the full gambit.

Was this the exact same project?

This is symptomatic of a drive which can not read what it just wrote. You either have bad discs, bad drive or bad cabling.

Good spot LOCO!

No, that reinforces my view that it's your drive.

Re: ImgBurn 2.4.1.0 "Verify" error - discs dodged?

It's the drive or a dodgy filter driver.

There's no way it should be reporting that the disc has suddenly changed to a DVD+RW or messing with the write speeds like that.

I tried my 20A1P earlier and that didn't have a problem burning to and verifying MCC-004-00 discs.

Re: ImgBurn 2.4.1.0 "Verify" error - discs dodged?

Hello

Thank you for the replies I thought it might be something with the drive - hence my topic. HOWEVER if it's the drive (or cable for that matter), how come with the older ImgBurn version everything is fine??

No, it was not the exact same project - as mentioned, i burned about 20 discs alltogether with the 2.4.1.0 version and ALL of them had the same error symptoms, i.e. verifying failed right at the beginning and the burner can't read them, however other drives CAN read them just fine.

And ALL discs burned with the older version (same discs, same spindle even) and of course same burner, before and after the new version, have NO error and read fine in the burner too.

My conclusion: ImgBurn 2.4.1.0 isn't for me, respectively my computer. 2.3.2.0 is good

Kind regards......

Thanh

Re: ImgBurn 2.4.1.0 "Verify" error - discs dodged?

It's an odd problem but I honestly can't see how it can be anything ImgBurn is doing. It's a drive problem, period.

Unless you find the real cause, you'll be stuck on the old version forever - which of course has it's own problems and lacks all the features found only in newer ones.

The only difference I can't really think of that *might* be making a difference is the 'DVD+R Reserve Track' option in the Settings on the Write tab.

It's disabled by default on v2.3.2.0 and enabled by default on v2.4.1.0

So try 2.4.1.0 again with it disabled and let me know how you get on.

My friend, it is THIS attitude which immediately and suddenly made me no longer like you. Microsoft-esque "we are perfect, any bug is YOUR fault".

It is NOT a drive problem, period. Because the drive works just fine with the older version.

It's a new version problem, PERIOD.

And i will not screw around with some obscure settings because, as mentioned, i am not a professional and burning DVD's just for the sake of burning something cost MY money and i don't have too much of that. Try living on 200 Euros per month, you'll understand (i live in Thailand).

2.3.2.0 does all i need, if newer versions introduce more bells and whistles but therefor more bugs as well i can very happily do without them.

I appreciate your software very much - but not the above mentioned attitude.

Best regards.....

Thanh

Re: ImgBurn 2.4.1.0 "Verify" error - discs dodged?

You've sooo taken what I'm saying the wrong way.

It's pretty clear there's a problem - we both agree on that.

What I'm trying to get across to you is that whilst ImgBurn might be triggering the problem, the problem itself is with the drive. It's doing something it shouldn't be doing.

It's like when a machine crashes (blue screen of death). Ok so you might have just been trying to do something simple in an application but it's hit a bug in a lower level driver and the driver has then caused the OS to blue screen. It's not the application's fault, it's the drivers.

The same thing is happening here. I couldn't make your drive produce the coaster it's producing if I tried. It's making it all by itself. All I do is supply it with data to burn. The fact that the discs work fine in all your other drives only goes to back that up. The firmware in drives has bugs too you know, that's why they release new versions!

The 'DVD+R Reserve Track' option in the settings has been there for ages, it just wasn't enabled by default until recently. I enabled it because it appears to make Samsung drives less likely to error out at the finalisation stage when burning DVD+R media. If turns out that it's had a negative effect on your drive then all I can say is that I'm sorry.

It's 1 checkbox, just untick it. The settings are there because not all drives are created equal and sometimes you need to tailor them to suit your burner.

If you don't try it, you'll never know if that was or wasn't the cause.

By all means drop the whole thing after you've done that, I'm only here to try and help you.

Re: ImgBurn 2.4.1.0 "Verify" error - discs dodged?

@LUK!

I'm puzzled by how the +R reserve track could result in a verification issue? I mean the OP's issue is reading sector 0!

Re: ImgBurn 2.4.1.0 "Verify" error - discs dodged?

It's not a verification error, it's a problem with the drive initialising the disc - hence why it's reporting it as DVD+RW and not DVD+R (and why the write speeds are messed up).

The L-EC error reported by the Read command (as part of the Verify function) probably comes from it using the wrong laser power or something because it thinks is a DVD+RW... I dunno, I don't deal with that side of things.
