Re: What was the last Blu-ray and HD DVD movie you watched?

Seen a bunch on HD-DVD as of late. U-571, Mission Impossible and Happy Feet all on HD-DVD. U-571 looked pretty good but I am content with my DVD version. Mission Impossible is a definite disappointment as it definitely could've had a sharper/less grainy picture. Happy Feet as with all CGI animated movies looked amazing.

I just read Michael Bay's comment regarding the grainy scenes, from this article: http://www.homemediamagazine.com/new...ticle_ID=12086

Quote:
The Rock, Bay’s second film after Bad Boys, was released in 1996. The Blu-ray edition appears grainy in certain shots, but Bay likes it that way. He uses it as an artistic choice, even in his more recent film.

“Yeah, there’s some grain, pushing film, shooting at night,” he said. “There’s actually some grain in Transformers. We pushed it just a little too much. I don’t mind grain. Grain has a vibe.”

Thanks zevia. Just read the article. Not too hard to tell Michael Bay is on Blu-ray's side.

Mission Impossible and Mission Impossible III on HD-DVD. Will be watching the Fast and The Furious series tonight as it just arrived. Got to love those cheap sales that have sprung up all over.

American Psycho on Blu-ray. One of my 5 free BD movies.
PQ was great but the movie sucked.

"Good Night , and Good Luck" on HD-DVD.

Here is an example of how beautiful a black and white image can be. This may be the closest example I've seen to the look of film. Much closer than 99% of the color films I've seen on HD discs.

Re: What was the last Blu-ray and HD DVD movie you watched?

Glad to hear that the Black and Whites can look good as well. Anyways I just went through the entire Fast and The Furious series and all of them look great (that being said the last two definitely have a PQ edge).

Tried Mission Impossible II last night. Looked decent but definitely not the benchmark of HD quality. Worth a rental though.

Resident Evil Extinction. Blu-ray. Crystal clear PQ

American Gangster. HD-DVD. Toshiba A-35 player had too many freezing problems to enjoy it. (new disc)

Re: What was the last Blu-ray and HD DVD movie you watched?

The Simpsons Movie on Blu-ray. I borrowed a friend's DVD and compared the two. You wouldn't think an animated movie on DVD with an Oppo DV-981HD upconverting DVD player and on Blu-ray with a Panasonic DMP-BD30 would make much of a difference when it comes to detail. But it does. By a lot.

Re: What was the last Blu-ray and HD DVD movie you watched?

Uh actually Animated movies tend to show the most visible gains. CGI animation even more so. @crossg glad to hear that about Sahara. I just ordered it from Deep Discount since it dropped to under $10 shipped and high-def digest rates it as reference quality material for PQ.

Re: What was the last Blu-ray and HD DVD movie you watched?

This isn't a movie but I just picked up The Eagles Farewell 1 Tour Live from Melbourne on HD-DVD and to my surprise the Audio is in DTS-HD-Master, (Just says DTS surround on the case) Needless to say the sound is kick a$$ and the PQ is pretty good too. Kinda makes my A-35 almost worth it.

All on HD-DVD

King Kong - Fantastic. Everything just looks SO good.
Appollo 13 - Bad. Grainy. Bad. Stick the the normal DVD.
Serenity - Space scenes look great. People looked a little grainy.
Transformers - Fantastic. The robots look out of this world.

Aeon Flux on HD-DVD. Movie is so-so at best but the PQ is beautiful and definitely shows off the way high-def can really look. I also like the way they setup the menu.

Re: What was the last Blu-ray and HD DVD movie you watched?

Blade Runner, the final cut (disc 1 of 5) on Blu-ray. I also bought an Onkyo-SR705 receiver a week ago from Circuit City. So for the first time ever, I was hearing Dolby TrueHD 5.1 *drools* Also available on HD-DVD.

Stardust on HD-DVD. Not really worth the investment on HD. It was worth a rental though.

Re: What was the last Blu-ray and HD DVD movie you watched?

Shooter HD-DVD. Paramount, DD+ Audio. Excellent PQ 4.5

Independance Day ID4. Blu-ray. Fox, DTS HD Master Audio. Keep your SD-DVD if you already have it.

Re: What was the last Blu-ray and HD DVD movie you watched?

Alice Cooper: Live at Montreux on Blu-ray. It's on HD-DVD too, but wasn't any cheaper (at least on amazon). The video is clear and you can see Alice Cooper's makeup job with stunning detail (a friend of mine got grossed out when I told him this). The audio is kind of disappointing, with Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 tracks, but the PCM lossless track only being in stereo. Which isn't too big of a deal if you're enough of a fan like I am.

Deep Purple Live at Montreux is much the same as you described. I found the Dolby Digital 5.1 track sounded way better than the DTS HD Master audio track.

Also watched:

Pan's Labyrinth. HD-DVD. Good PQ and audio.

I am Legend. Blu-ray. Good PQ, as for the movie??

Re: What was the last Blu-ray and HD DVD movie you watched?

Just finished the Die Hard collection in Blu-ray. Fox, DTS HD Master Audio.
PQ and audio is quite a bit better than the standard versions.

Note: My Die Hard 2 will not properly Bitstream DTS master and I found that Fox is offering a replacement disc for discs with this issue.
