What was the last Blu-ray and HD DVD movie you watched?

Happy Feet in Blu-ray.

Transformers in HD-DVD. Still sometime confused which is the good guys and bad guys during the fighting scenes in the city.

Watching Planet Earth (Discovery HD) in Blu-ray.
Finished Disc #3, one more to go.

Some people says Planet Earth is one of reference movie because of the high quality video. It is.

Yes many people have recommended Planet Earth to me so I will have to watch it. Just watched Spiderman 3 on Blu-ray, can't say much for the movie but the video quality was excellent. BTW zevia what happened to your sig in post #3?

Re: What was the last Blu-ray and HD-DVD movie you watched?

Black Hawk Down (Blu-ray).
Watched it on PC and then a few minutes played on the PS3 just to compare playback quality.
Not really my type of film, but it was bundled with the PS3.

Anyway, picture quality is awesome. Comparing Blu-ray with DVD. Well, i guess it's like comparing AM radio with DAB. They are light-years apart.

Re: What was the last Blu-ray and HD-DVD movie you watched?

Cars in Blu-ray.

The blu-ray version just out this past Tuesday. Our family watched it again on PS3 and wow, the picture is really crisp. I had to dig up my Cars DVD version to compare the picture quality and it is a big difference. The main movie is in 00060.m2ts (28.5 GB), no wonder it's a big difference compared to the DVD9 version.

Bought a Toshiba 47" 1080P LCD and an HD-DVD player a few days ago, then watched 2001: A Space Odyssey after buying it for the third time (VHS, DVD, now HD-DVD). OMFG - the amount of detail, especially in the landscape with all the apes at the beginning and the starfields later on, is awesome.

I'll probably watch the Matrix trilogy that I also bought for the third time (the first movie anyway) next.

Watched Tomb Raider in Blu-ray.

The picture quality is not so great btw, but the actress helps make it up.

Re: What was the last Blu-ray and HD-DVD movie you watched?

Watched Shaun of the Dead in HD-DVD last night. Picture quality was great in bright scenes but kind of grainy in darker scenes (especially the scene where Shaun and Liz are trapped underground). If you're a die hard fan of Shaun of the Dead like I am, get the movie and you won't be disappointed on the quality compared to upconverted DVD. If not, then pass on it or just rent it and save your money for something like King Kong or Transformers or The Matrix trilogy.

Open Season in Blu-ray.

Watched again to check how it compares with the DVD version. Excellent graphics, very detailed, far beyond the dvd version.

Re: What was the last Blu-ray and HD-DVD movie you watched?

Just watched Beerfest on HD-DVD. For the first time, I had to turn the colors down to "standard" on the LCD screen. On the "sports" setting that I've had it on, other movies like the Matrix and Transformers have looked great. With Beerfest, the colors look overly saturated and people's faces look orange.

Just wondering what color settings other people have their tv's set to. With the "sports" setting, colors look nice and bright (and I think that's where stores like Circuit City set their TVs to try to sell more), but overly saturated at times. With the "movies" setting, colors look too dim. So "standard" seems like a nice compromise.

Oh, and after turning the colors down, Beerfest looks good in hi-def. Although don't expect to be wowed by a hi-def movie about people standing around and drinking beer.

Re: What was the last Blu-ray and HD-DVD movie you watched?

Just watched Live Free or Die Hard on Blu-ray. Disc didn't work right away in my Samsung BD-P1400. Had to update the firmware again to get the disc to play. Updated FW 3 times in the last month. Hopefully this won't be the norm as it takes forever to update.

We are just into the dawn of these players, the infancy of the firmware, I am surprised they do not have automated firmware updates, this will drive a normal user crazy.

Re: What was the last Blu-ray and HD-DVD movie you watched?

Mine probably does have auto update but I would have to drag a Lan cable across my living room and plug it into the Blu-ray player and that isn't going to happen. So I have to DL the ISO FW update, burn it to a CD and and update that way. Takes about 20 minutes.

Flags of Our Fathers (HD) last night. Excellent movie, not what you might think. The story of the Iwo Jima flag raisers and how it affected their lives afterwards.

Re: What was the last Blu-ray and HD DVD movie you watched?

Japanese import:

HBO series "Band of Brothers", 5 disc HD-DVD set. This set has the best picture quality I've seen, (equal to Planet Earth), and DTS-HD audio. Makes an excellent HD demo, as well as being some of the best TV ever made. Too bad it's not available in HD in any other form as of yet. Blows the SD-DVD set completely away for both picture and sound. Rumor has it that this set is already out of print. You do have to navigate the Japanese menus though.
