Toshiba launches new marketing strategy with HD-DVD

Some are claiming it has come too late but then again others say this will help ensure that HD-DVD isn't going anywhere in the near future. I see some disenchanted Blu-Ray standalone owners in the not too distant future who might gladly take an opportunity to get in on a cheaper format where they can purchase and entry line model and still enjoy the latest releases:

Re: Toshiba launches new marketing strategy with HD-DVD

Interesting text at the end of the article.

Quote:
The new low pricing of the HD DVD players is attractive, but when consumer find out that new movies only get Blu-ray releases it will not help much.

Now the HD format war is even more confusing as nobody knows how fast it will end. I would also not have been surprised if Toshiba would have announced today to discontinue HD DVD.

Not yet. Anyways as to the first review it's pretty clear that it is the opinion of the writer. I will go ahead and repost with the official release from Toshiba since it has more detailed info.

This is Toshiba press release:

Quote:
WAYNE, N.J., Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Toshiba America Consumer Products, L.L.C. ("Toshiba") today announced that it is stepping up its successful marketing campaign for HD DVD as it experienced record-breaking unit sales in the fourth quarter of 2007. Major initiatives, including joint advertising campaigns with studios and extended pricing strategies will begin in mid- January and are designed to spotlight the superior benefits of HD DVD as well as the benefits HD DVD brings to a consumer's current DVD library by upconverting standard DVDs via the HDMI(TM) output to near high definition picture quality.

Re: Toshiba launches new marketing strategy with HD-DVD

Thus far it is true, wouldn't be surprised to see things happen elsewhere in the near future though. No complaints out of me if they want to make the hardware cheap enough that it doesn't matter if the format fails.

Prices dropped here yesteday although not as much as the US. Picked up an A-30 for $219 and I can live with that price. Afterall what was I going to do with the HD-DVD movies I already owned.

Re: Toshiba launches new marketing strategy with HD-DVD

From what Steve Jobs had to say neither of these formats will survive
Quote:
Quote from Steve Jobs
Blu-ray he said he believed had won the war over HD-DVD but that both formats would lose to HD downloads. Although he is one of the more prominent people to proclaim that, analysts have repeatedly said that the battle only accomplished one thing: Making enough time for streaming HD to become a viable option.

Re: Toshiba launches new marketing strategy with HD-DVD

Yeah but the fact that you need the apple TV for their downloads kinda makes that a moot point.
