Yeah there were some subtle hints though the movie that he was, and the foil Unicorn at the end ? Was that to say he or she was unique or both of them???

Re: HD-DVD or Blu Ray picture quality rating?

on average HD-DVD looks better, almost every HD-DVD is encoded with AVC or VC1.

There is far to much MPEG2 crap in blu-ray. Another bad thing is that most BD movies don't mention what codec was used on the box. You never know if you are buying a good AVC/VC1 encoding or some piss-poor MPEG2 encode.

Re: HD-DVD or Blu Ray picture quality rating?

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with MPEG2, picture quality-wise.
Given adequate bit rates, it shouldn't look much different than anything else. Unfortunately, it takes easily 2x the space on a disc to realize that quality, and probably more time in the encoding process too. Anyway, don't blame MPEG2, blame the people who are creating bad encoding.

2.5 Rating. Terminator 3. Rise of the Machines. HD-DVD. Keep your original SD-DVD if you have it.

@nekrosoft13. Whatever format they use I am not seeing any better video quality with HD-DVD in fact I am starting to give the nod to Disney for picture quality. But that's just one opinion.

On the whole, the best HD-DVD PQ I've seen is from Warner.

Yes true, animation movies' picture quality from Disney, Pixar etc are extremely amazing. The last animation movie I watched was Ratatouille and I can see every single hair of the rat and its herd plus the cooks, not the case with the DVD version.

To be fair to the Oppo though, the oppo supports things such as Divx, Xvid and other i-net formats, PAL and NTSC support for DVDs, upconverts to 1080p versus 1080i (yeah, I know that's a pretty weak argument), carries the Faroudja chip which is better at smoothing out the jaggies, ect. than the Sharc processor used by Toshiba and most of all you never have to use the lame "fill" feature on your TV to get rid of the sidebars. The Oppo automatically takes care of everything for you and still looks great. That and it can be made region free by just punching in a 4 digit code on the remote. Not saying the A3 isn't a good up-conversion player, I'm just saying that the Oppo does give you a number of options that you don't get with the A3. I dunno, I guess it's just me but I think that it's not worth $180 if you are just going to use it as an upconversion player. Now if it were like the A2 special and you got it for $100, that would be a different story.

Picked up Ratatouille and it does look good. May be my player but these Disney discs are starting to get a little irritating with the previews. For some reason I can't access the main menu until I skip through all of the 10 or 12 previews. Don't know if anyone else watches the previews but I happened to catch that they are re-mastering (or whatever they do)Snow White and showed the preview to the new version. Looks to me like they need to leave it alone. Didn't look like it was worth the effort at all.

The Helios H4000, this company is relatively unknown and has not had the best reviews.

The other is LG

Model LDA-831

Both of these units both upscale via component (480i/480p/720p/1080i/1080p)

I currently have a LG LDA-831 and use it on my one TV's that does not have HDMI inputs.

Whilst the LG players do output HD via component, they fall back to 480p if the DVD is "copy-protected".

Anybody watched U-571 or Vanhelsing on HD-DVD? Just wondering if they are worth getting the HD version.

There's a coupla places around that list the audio codecs on HD/BD titles. Odds are good that it will have terrific audio whether it's DD+ or THD. There may also be a Japanese release with THD or even DTS-MA audio.

Used your link and went through the list to decide which movies I wanted for free. Some were poor so I went mostly by the PQ rating. Need TMNT like a hole in the head but it got the best score. Maybe when my 8 year old Nieces (twins) visit it will keep them entertained.

Re: HD-DVD or Blu Ray picture quality rating?

U-571. HD-DVD. Universal Pictures.
Very good picture quality 3++ rating. Although standard DTS 5.1 it still sounds good when the depth charges are going off.

Re: HD-DVD or Blu Ray picture quality rating?

Hey,

I bought a Toshiba HD A30 ,I am confused about what I am reading, like HD is region free, wich of course I tried but no luck ! Now I am reading your post that talk about a 4 digit region free code, could you help me with this? I am from Europe and most of my dvd's are region 2.

Thanks
