Your input on my purchase?

Hello, I accidently bought a 50 inch plasma thinking it was an LCD. Its is an samsung FPT5084.

Full specs can be found here:
http://www.dealtime.com/xPF-Samsung-FPT5084

So, I wanted to return it because it was a plasma, and my friends tell me plasma's are great but they dont last as long. So should I go for an LCD screen. It was a bit expensive, here is my current setup and my soon to be, if I return it and get an LCD screen.

Purchase 1 (Boscovs):
1. Samsung 50" FPT5084 / $1999 + TAX
2. 5YR Warranty / 389 + Tax
TOTAL: $2505.16
-DOES NOT HAVE HOME THEATER SYSTEM!

Soon To Purchase (Amazon):
1. Samsung 46" LNT4665F / $1999 NO TAX
2. 4YR Warranty / $279.99 NO TAX
3. Samsung 5.1 HT-TX75 DVD Home Theater System / $379.99 NO TAX
TOTAL: $2659.97
-INCLUDES HOME THEATER SYSTEM

Also, both the TV's have the new 120Hz built in, and the soon to purchase has an extra 5000 contrast ratio, compared to the one I just purchased (15000:1 / 20000:1).

So should I return it and get a an LCD that will have a beter contrast ratio and a HOME THEATER SYSTEM! which is only 4 inches lower.

Re: Your input on my purchase?

Why not buy a warranty on the plasma you have now? You can buy a real nice surround sound system at Wallmart for 300 dollars.

$300-$400 on sound setup is no good to me.

Re: Your input on my purchase?

The Samsung plasma FPT5084 is really nice and folks at AVS love it. I also have a Samsung plasma and love it. I would say keep it.

But don't get the $389 extended warranty. It's useless for most of the case. I believe Samsung warranty for this model is 2 years so that's plenty of time.

The panel life is 60.000 hours so if you watch 8-12 hours a day (which is a lot for most people), it will last for 15-20 years by my calculation.

If you want a simple Home Theater in a Box (HTIB), consider Onkyo HT-SR800 7.1 system for around $400. It has plenty of power for your current need. But if you plan to get a Blu-ray player down the road, the Onkyo (and most HTIB) does not decode High Definition audio formats over HDMI but it has 7.1 multi ch analog inputs to enjoy the hi-def audio.

If you want HTIB that has HDMI audio processing, you can search for Onkyo HT-SP908 which is around $700-800.

Re: Your input on my purchase?

I understand that, but arent LCD's better. I am basically getting the same TV except its 4 inches lower with a better contrast ratio with a warranty and a home theater system for about the same price. Also my friends tell me that plasma's are great for playing XBOX 360 / PS3, but burn real easily.

Re: Your input on my purchase?

Burn-in on plasma is a problem starting with EDTV and continued with older generations of HDTV. The new generation of plasma still have burn-in issue due to the properties of phosphor based panel. But since a couple years ago, manufacturers have been working on ways to prevent burn-in. Samsung has the built in "Screen Burn Protection" in the setup menu with Pixel Shift and Signal Pattern. Having said that, most newer generation plasma TV (like yours above) will probably never have a burn in problem.

Note that you might get temporary ghosting but this is different than burn-in. Burn-in is damaged pixels while ghosting (ie after static image for an hour or so) can be fixed easily.

Get the LCD, Plasma's suck and have a lot of problems. I personally believe that technology is on it's way out. That is why Sony stopped making them, and that speaks for itself
