Please help; the best HD-Ready on PC with DVI?

Hi,

can anyone please tell me what 32'' LCD HD-ready TV should I buy for viewing the HD signal (WMV-HD for example) on a PC using the DVI Cable?

here in Germany everything is at the beginning. when I ask stuff like that I get answers like 'you can connect the PC to the TV using the D-SUB analog' .

I don't want to buy a computer hd monitor like apple hd cinema 30'', because it is a little to pricey.
I read a lot of articles about normal HD-Ready and there was not so much information about digital connection between HD-TV and PC, or how good the image is.

so anyone has experience with normal HD-Ready TV like Samsung or Philips, etc
that is looking really high def great on a PC?

Thanks, any input is welcomed

Re: Please help; the best HD-Ready on PC with DVI?

It all depends on the gfx card and its output quality when you want to connect it this way.

I would wait a few months further, because actually LCDs with native HDTV res (1080i/p) are slowly showing up on the market. Price now starting at € 1500. Eg. BenQ.

Graphic card is ati radeon 9800 XT 256MB
and 1080 is in Germany still science fiction.

for me 720p (LCD 32'') will be more than enough.

1080 is no sci-fi in germany.

Probably you haven't heard about Pro7 HD and Sat.1 HD??

I live in Germany, be sure I know what I'm talking about.

Re: Please help; the best HD-Ready on PC with DVI?

I'm sorry, I know about them and you are right.
I should add that a 1080p capable TV will be too expensive for me.

I really can't see myself paying more than 1500 - 2000euro for a TV. That's why I said 720.

Can you give some information about TVs like these?

Re: Please help; the best HD-Ready on PC with DVI?

You're not going to see any difference between 720p and 1080i on a 32" screen anyway. Most people can't see it on a 60".

Anyway, any 16:9 aspect, 720p capable monitor with DVI input should meet your needs. Get the best one you can afford.

Re: Please help; the best HD-Ready on PC with DVI?

Well if you are not to concerned about quality, if its 720p or 1080i I would suggest you try and find articles about HDTV on the net etc.

That will tell you a lot more than a person in a electronic store selling TVs.

I am not into this that much (ain't got any HDTV over here) won't bee for a while either, probably 2-3 years. Unless I get sattelite maby.

Anyway do make sure you get a TV (LCD/TFT) that has a fast respons time, computers monitors are down to 8ms in respons time. This is allso important for a TV since it need to handle a lot of motion in a scene.

And you must get a HDTV ready TV, it should have a logo saying it is HDTV ready. And you can get a good tv for about 1000-1400 Euro.

Re: Please help; the best HD-Ready on PC with DVI?

The problem actually is that HDMI 1.3 were just specified but isn't available for actual TVs... Same problem in a similar way for other specifications, and they come even up with new "standards". :z

I read the whole article and the TV Tests
Their conclusion is very dissapointing:
the hdready TVs are no good for PCs using DVI. The image is really bad.

and they say, if you don't have a real HD source you throw your money away buying such a TV. The normal television doesn't look good at all on HD-TVs.

_chef_ you said that in Germany there are already HD channels like pro7 . yes but in the moment not so many people can receive this, because there are still no settop boxes or cable available. The same with Premiere.
The only way you can receive and view HD Pro7 is on satellite with a DVB-S Card connected to the PC. But what's the point? you cannot see this on your HD-Ready TV, because you can't connect the PC with DVI to the TV.
You can only use your PC monitor, and that's normally not so big. More than a 24" PC monitor is really very expensive.

So I don't know what to do, I'll probably have to wait for a few years till the technology is catching up.

Nonsense. There are certainly plenty of crappy monitors being sold as "HD-Ready", but there are also plenty of good monitors. How well they display lower res pictures is one of the things that separate them. "HD-Ready" doesn't actually mean anything. If you look only at monitors that display a true 1080i, you'll narrow the field considerably, but there are also decent sets that display 720p only.

That's not correct, an DVB-S card won't help you. You need an DVB-S2 card like the one announced by KNC ONE.

Re: Please help; the best HD-Ready on PC with DVI?

I pick my tv's the way my father taught me to. You go to a store with a large selection, and then watch each one a couple of times until you see which has the picture you like the best. View it from several angles and make sure you can see the picture well from any angles. Buy the one you liked. I've even gone as far as to take the exact one I was watching, as there can be slight differences in same models (ie: dead pixels, weak capacitors, etc..) It might be rare, but I've never gone wrong with this method. At the very least, you will find the make and model number you like, and can then search for bargains or deals on that same one.

And buy the one you have seen in action, not another one in a cartoon.
