I wonder if both plants in China are going to like that

It all looks pretty impressive indeed.

I hope there's a zero-pixel-defect policy for 5 years on those huge tft screens.

Nikkei Weekly

All eyes on flat-panel TV markets Television sales projected to surge 60% by fiscal 2006 to whopping 300 billion yen.
Japanese flat-panel TV makers are stepping up sales at home and abroad at the same time that Dell Inc. of the U.S. plans to enter the liquid crystal display TV market.
Market entry by the world's largest personal computer maker is expected to create intense competition in an industry dominated by Japanese companies.

Victor Co. of Japan, known as JVC, plans a sales offensive for its LCD and plasma models. The company will introduce five flat-panel TV models during the end-of-the-year sales season in Japan and will begin selling projection TVs based on its proprietary technology in the U.S. by summer. Sales of TVs, including cathode-raytube sets, are projected to jump 60% from fiscal 2002 to 300 billion yen in fiscal 2006.
Soon to be launched in Japan are 17-, 23- and 32-inch LCD TVs and 42- and 50-inch plasma TVs. JVC currently sells a 26-inch LCD
model. The new products are due to hit U.S. and European markets later.

The new projection TV for sale in the U.S. uses a component called D-ILA (Direct Drive Image Light Amplifier), which features a high-density, reflective liquid crystal structure. The device is said to provide a superior combination of brightness, resolution, contrast and color for a big screen. The company claims that its 50- to 70-inch projection TVs consume less energy, offer higher resolution and are cheaper than plasma TVs.

The LCD components, which will be made at JVC's Yokohama plant, will be shipped to JVC Industrial de Mexico SA, where the projection TVs will be assembled for shipment to the U.S. The company said it will also consider selling the projection model in Japan and Europe.

Sanyo Electric Co. plans to begin selling LCD TVs and terrestrial digital TVs in the U.S. and Europe next April. It has already begun planning its product lines for the two export markets, and appears to be in discussions with major distribution firms regarding product-delivery contracts. Sanyo has also been taking a more aggressive stance toward LCD TVs since it decided to re-enter the market this fiscal year. Sanyo plans to produce LCD
TVs as well as CRT TVs for terrestrial digital broadcasts in North America for the market there.

It will offer LCD TVs ranging from 15-20 inches. The digital terrestrial TVs will be 28-36 inches. In Europe, Sanyo began by offering terrestrial digital TVs in September in Britain, where such broadcasting has already begun. It plans to begin sales of LCD TVs throughout Europe next April.

Meanwhile, Dell plans to roll out low-priced products in the U.S. under its own brand as early as this month. The company will sell LCD TVs under the Dell name, exploiting the unique sales and inventory-management techniques it established for its PC operations.
The U.S. company will also consider selling LCD TVs in Japan and other countries this year or next. Dell will initially release TVs with 17-inch LCD screens in the U.S. in late October or November. It will sell the products directly to consumers over the phone and the Internet to keep costs down. It plans to later roll out a 30-
inch model and also begin selling LCD TVs outside the U.S.
The company plans to procure LCD screens from South Korea and outsource assembly. Japanese companies, such as Sharp Corp., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. and Sony Corp., have a large
presence in the LCD TV market, with a combined share exceeding 70% in 2002.

Japanese-made 17-inch LCD TVs are priced at around 100,000 yen, and U.S. retailers market their privatebrand models at about $600. It is unknown at what price Dell will market its 17-inch model, but an official said the company will offer a competitive price, possibly 30-40% cheaper than Japanese models. In 2002, global sales of LCD TVs totaled slightly more than 1.3 million units, about 50% of which were sold by Sharp.

South Korean firm Samsung Electronics Co. was No. 2 in the market.

Re: 54-inch TFT-LCD HDTV (large pictures inside)

I plan on setting up a sticky here to briefly compare the different technologies. My HDTV system is the Panasonic PT-AE500E projector After using this system for over two months now, I cannot see myself going for any smaller screen. Below are a few pictures taken with a digital camera, however the real picture looks much much better than in my snapshots below:

At the touch of a few buttons, my bedroom turns in to a cinema (88" picture)

A close-up of two icons just to show how sharp the picture is.

I have seen several plasma TV's and other large TV systems since, but the thing that has put me off the others is either contrast issues or colour. For example, the red on a plasma TV looks kind of red-orange to me, but on my projector, it looks pure red like on a CRT.

The LCD TV's above look really impressive. The only disadvantage I find with a projector system is that it requires a dark room. The darkest image shown is the abient light reflected off the wall/screen. LCD has that major advantage of working in a subtraction method where an enabled pixel turns black, thus resulting in a very clear picture even in a bright room.

If im not mistaken there is a special kind of foil type of thing wich u can use as a screen to project on its silver and it will give a much better contrast

Hey but you know big TVs are like big fast cars, they say the bigger the car the smaller your ding-a-ling, same goes for TVs (probably).

I think I'd trade an inch or two off my "ding-a-ling" for that 80" HDTV!

Re: 54-inch TFT-LCD HDTV (large pictures inside)

Some of my friends in South Korea bought PT-AE500E recently. I also thought of buying one but I haven't because I couldn't decide where to install it. Even further delayed because now we live in a much smaller home.

Re: 54-inch TFT-LCD HDTV (large pictures inside)

According to the the manual for my PT-AE500E, it can be placed as close as about 1 Metre from the wall. The picture may not be as big though, but will still be large enough Anyway, if you do not have space for the projector, consider mounting it from the ceiling as it has supports a ceiling mount and 180 degree picture rotation.

With my system, I just use the wall as the screen. My wall is a light matt blue, but a minor adjustment to the colour tint and the white looks pure white and the colours still look excellent (unlike other large displays I have seen). My snapshot above is before any adjustments as I took it a few hours after unpacking it!

One thing I find amusing is what happened when a few kids came to visit. They kept making hand signals in the projection to try and show bat, heads, etc. in the projected picture! Then it is interesting to hear the kids shouting out "He's got a cinema in his bedroom!'

That's great tips using the wall as the screen and mounting the projector from the ceiling.

The current TV I use primarily is an LG 29-inch HDTV without set-top. I bought it for 590,000 Won including VAT or about US$500.

How much did you pay for your PT-AE500E? Some South Koreans go to Tokyo and buy projectors. The price difference is usually much more than the air ticket price.

Re: 54-inch TFT-LCD HDTV (large pictures inside)

Mine costed €1,694 inc. VAT back in March at Komplett.ie. The price has gone up by about €30 since. Most people thought I was crazy spending that much on a TV, but once anyone seen my set-up it was suddenly "That is well worth it". Don't forget to consider a decent speaker set-up. Mines is custom built (2 x 80w RMS 3-driver speakers, 440w car stereo amplifier, 12 volt heavy-duty transformer and three 5 watt amplified speakers for the centre and two rear speakers).

If you decide to buy it abroad, good luck getting through customs. I remember taking a 15" TFT across a 3-plane trip (US -> Ireland). One checked out the display for traces of explosives, etc. Another just asked me to open my bag. The final airport was more interested in checking my shoes, patting me down (due to setting off the metal detector) and never asked me to unlock my bag before taking it onboard!

LG is announcing the mass production of 56-inch LCD flat-panel TV. So far, it's the largest size LCD TV ever mass produced.

It's 55 inch, not 56 and it has a built-in HDTV set-top box. South Korean price is nearly 20,000,000 Won.
