If you pick your speakers right you can mix and match to a point, as long as they are fairly close to each other in efficiency and tonal balance. Of course buying all the same kind makes that easier as they should match each other right then without any tweaking at all. That's why all the AV receivers have the individual volume controls for each surround speaker or everything would be out of balance, especially when you consider that not everyone will place all their speakers exactly the same distance apart all the way around even if they all are a perfect match for each other.
I also built my main speakers, then added a Minimus 7 as a center and some Infinity small 3 ways in the rear. it all sounds pretty good together once I get all the levels balanced right. The Minimus 7 takes the most gain to match the others as it is very small so not as efficient I guess, the fronts and backs match pretty good level wise and sound quality as well. I also got a nice Parts Express 12" powered sub, one of the best sounding ones out there for the least amount of money, great bang for buck for what you get.

Re: Onkyo TX-SR805 - good choice of AV Receiver?

Ok the 805 I had was a repack and I told them I wouldn't accept it, but at the time there were no other 805's in stock. They said take it and we will replace it when we receive new stock. Just got the new one today. After running all ch stereo (7 channels) for three hours my temp has maxed at 51 deg c which is a big difference from 69 deg c on the unit I returned. I can actually hold my hand on the hot spot now. Also came with the latest FW and DSP's which is great because updating FW on these things can be bitch. Now a happy camper.
FW 1.08
DSP's
SR8051/08214A
SR8052/07518A
SR8053/07820B

BTW. I have the latest FW if anyone needs it (you can't get it from Onkyo yet). You need a RS232 straight through cable to do the update from your PC. If you want it PM me.
Disclaimer: As with any fw update you are responsible if anything happens and you brick your reciever.

Just returned from vacation and hope to get around to hooking up the 805 as soon as I finish all the honey-do things that stacked up on me for the past couple of weeks first.

I ended up ordering the 705 from Amazon for $499 since the price for the 805 has gone up and in back-order for 7-9 weeks.

Yep I love it. My brother was over the other night and we cranked it with some music and now his Onkyo 705 is not good enough. He is exchanging it for an 805. Funny how that works. Also had an 120mm Sythe fan laying around so I went looking for a 12 volt DC feed. Used an old Cell phone charger that puts out 5.5v DC and wired it up, 12v was too noisey. Put the fan on the back right hand corner and now temp doesn't get over 45 degC

Re: Onkyo TX-SR805 - good choice of AV Receiver?

Got the 805 hooked up over the weekend and was really blown away. It does get pretty warm, but I put a lap-top chiller under it and that seemed to help.

I had a little trouble with the Audessy (auto-speaker calibration). It returns an "error" on the back surrounds. I have the fronts bi-amped and removed the back surrounds from the speaker config, but the system still tries to look for them. I'm sure I'm missing a step somewhere.

Any suggestions?

You probably already did this but did you set the the speaker type to Bi-Amp under speaker settings/speaker type?

Edit: Did you remove the speaker jumpers for Bi Amping?

Re: Onkyo TX-SR805 - good choice of AV Receiver?

I did remove the jumpers, but I will have to double check on the speaker settings. I looked through the speaker config menus, but could have missed that.

Thanks for the info.

Re: Onkyo TX-SR805 - good choice of AV Receiver?

It's the first thing in Speaker settings
Screen says:
2.1 Speaker Settings:
Speaker Impedance: 4 or 6 ohms.
Speaker Type: Normal or Bi Amp.
