Mike and Kipper thanks for making me jealous enough that I pulled the trigger on an 805. Good thing is that they will exchange my 705 and $250.00 more. Still have to wait for re-stock though. It would be great to get one in the USA for half the price but I checked into it and if it doesn't say CSA approved (similar to your UL), or complies with Canadian ICES-003 on the back of the unit and say my house burns down because of this receiver my insurance would not cover it. Also not sure about the warranty when it comes to crossing borders. The 705 is a great receiver but I am sure I will be happier with the 805. I need to see a hypnotist to cure me of this upgrade problem I have.

I just know that you're gonna just love the 805 - also make sure your HDMI connection is 1.3a certified to get the best bandwidth-eh!!

Yup already had all that set up with the 705. Picked up the 805 yesterday and set it up. Very happy with my decision. However a little worried about the temp, 69 deg c is as high as I have seen it before the fans cut in. Looks like I will be buying that cooler linked above.

Attached a list of some hidden commands so you can see your Firmware versions, DSP's and other stuff.

If the Onkyo is using a diode on the board somewhere as a temp sensor, readings should be taken with a grain of salt. The cooling fans will either be driven by the output load or by the temperature. Load-driven cooling fans are common, so you'd want to know which it is. It's not unusual for an amp to be hotter at low loads than it is at high loads because of this.

You can get a cheap thermal sensor with digital readout at Radio Shack or most anywhere that will give you more accurate readings.

Thanks Dan. I've have a Fluke DMM at work that does pretty accurate temp readings as well. That said I can not keep my hand on the top right corner because it's just too hot. Which we know is great for a quicker death of electronic parts. Some people have stated that a 120mm fan (on top R/H corner blowing out) drops the temp 20-25 deg c. I just read a review of this beast and it has a huge power supply, Specs say minimum 130 watts per channel with two channels driven. During a cook test (part 5 of the review under bench test)2 channels driven with 8 ohm the 805 was putting out 173 watts at the point of clipping so I guess that's why it's hot. yada yada. As long as I can find a nice quiet fan that I can plug into the back of the AVR that turns off and on with the AVR I will be happy.

@Mike I am not an audiophile by any means of the word but whether it's the Burr-Brown chip or just more power the 805 sounds awesome, cleaner and clearer when compared to the 705. My 705 sounded a little stressed around 60-70 on the absolute volume scale which is pretty loud but the 805 doesn't even bat an eye at those settings. I am sure my nieghbors hate me by now but now I can pay him back for starting that fr*ken noisey diesel truck every morning at 5:30 am.

Thanks for the .doc - will do that after my next movie plays - might get the fan just to add to the life of the powersupply - as heat is the fastest killer of any electrical/electronic component - mine continues to be only warm to the touch - but then again - I play mine at around 65 on the loudness setting-eh

Says Made in Malaysia on the box. The internal specs could be a little different for the US and Canada though. Been running it for the last 10 hours with PLIIx music mode all 7 channels running and the temp has never gone above 64 deg c so maybe it's settling in.

Onkyo products seem to be consistent throughout all their models regardless of which location they were made and/or assembled.

Hopefully your right and it's not like the quality of some media that's made in Malaysia. Just got off the phone with Onkyo tech support, I asked for the operating temprature specs since they are not in the manual. All he would say is they do get hot.

I just noticed Amazon has the Onkyo 805 back in stock for $598.99! You can request for a refund for the price difference since you have ordered it less than 30 days ago. BTW, how do you like this receiver? I currently has the Panasonic XR55 and am looking to upgrade to a better receiver that supports TrueHD/DTS-HD. Thank you.

I think the thread starter was trying to help out and keep the data in one place but he caught a lot of flak by owners for the thread title.

Seems more like bad capacitors popping and sparking from what I have read so far.

Hey all -

I'm new to the club! I'm a total novice whose been researching AV equipment for 4-5 months.

I was leaning heavily toward the Denon AVR-3808CI, but could not resist the 805 at the $598 price on Amazon. I'm a little worried about the heat issue, but according to a guy a work with who has one, the Denon also gets pretty warm.

My 805 should arrive in a week or so. We'll see then.

Having owned a Denon AVR 3802 - and with the TX-SR805 replacing it - I can honestly say that for less than 1/2 the price of a new 3808CI - the 805 with THX Ultra2 simply blows the Denon away in most specs - sound and price-eh!!

I once repaired receivers. Onkyo's where bullet proof. They are usually overbuilt and underrated. I have a cheaper Onkyo TX-SR505. My speakers are so efficient that at a volume of 50 it is just too darn loud, no distortion at all. I have never been a fan of extremely high wattage as Mandelbrot proved there is more errors
with higher voltage/watts/amperage. I personally have found 65 watts to be sufficient for 90% of households. If it isn't, then the speakers probably are not too efficient. I build my own speakers, except for the Genesis II speakers I use for my rear surround speakers.

Is it important to match the sub with the rest as well?

It will work in synergy with the rest of the system and sound really good - as the Infinity system is highly engineered to work together-eh

(btw - recommend going to a brick & mortar store and listen to ANY system BEFORE buying - and assume that you did that before you bought the Beta 50's)
