Putting a Lite-on in an external 1394 enclosure

A friend wants to put a Lite-on 48246S in an external 1394 enclosure. He lives on the other side of the country, and is not up to doing any debugging that might be necessary, although he should be ok to rig up the box and plug it into a well tested 1394 card on an XP system (XP Pro, but no SP1).

I've seen a number of posts on using external 1394 boxes for IDE HDDs, but nothing here on doing the same with IDE CD-RWs.

I'm most concerned about possible SW issues. Will various burner programs recognize the drive correctly? Do I need to flash it as some recognized 1394 CD-RW so it will work ok (as opposed to being a recognized IDE drive as a 48246S)? If so, any suggestions as to which FW to use?

Unfortunately, any real hands-on is impossible at this stage. He has the drive on the US east coast, and I'm on the US west coast. I installed his system, so I am familiar with it, and can walk him through most simple stuff and can use PCanywhere for Windows-based SW. If necessary, he could ship me the CD for DOS based flashing.

No external case has been selected yet, and advice would be welcome.

I'm also concerned about speed - Firewire should have enough bandwidth to allow writing at 48x without pause, but there have been posts wondering why their system doesn't write at full speed over 1394.

He skipped "do it yourself" and bought a Buslink with 1394 from J&R. Now he's got a spare 48246S.

I had a look via PCAnywhere.

Nero and CDspeed report it as a LTR 52246S, and it works perfectly at full 52x burn speed. I watched it burn the CDspeed test disc, and it was like it was internal. CD quality and scandisc ran at full speed.

The OS (XP, no SP1) sees it as a Buslink 1394 device, and gives it special treatment, and clearly recognizes it as both a Buslink 1394 and a Liteon CD burner, depending upon where you dig.

I'm very impressed with XP's handling of the complex situation.

I don't know what would have happened if we had put the 48246S in a 1394 box - that Buslink ID in the OS says it's far from transparent...

Some of the features does work, some dont, can't recall which, was a while ago I tried it.

I use a 5224S in a Sony Firewire box, never had a problem, works as fast as it would in a desktop.

Dropped a Sony DRU500 in same box 2 days ago, and works just as well.

Firewire is the best, THE BEST!

I know someone who has a CD-burner-less iMac with Mac OS 9. I have a Lite-On drive (LTR-48125W I think) that I believe doesn't have original Lite-On firmware (it's a Pacific Digital brand). Would I be able to run this in a Firewire enclosure on that iMac?
