Is it possible to make your own external optical drive enclosure?

Hi, i've been looking around for a slim external optical drive to buy recently, they are all quite expensive. I've noticed that the actual optical drive inside these enclosures are much cheaper to buy yourself. Is it possible to buy one of these and get a drive to USB converter you can simply hook up to the back of the optical drive and connect to your pc usb ports? Please post suggestions and links to mods and tutorials
