External Enclosures Discuss, Just got a 3550 and Bytec enclosure-trash? at CD and DVD Burners forum; I just got my 3550 and a bytec external enclosure from newegg (the only that only has usb 2.0). Is this enclosure any good? I had to get an enclosure because I only have a laptop...probably should have gotten the firewire version. Anyways, should I keep this enclosure?

Is there a recommended firmware to upgrade the drive to and is that even possible through USB? If I keep this enclosure how fast can I burn dvds although speed isnt a huge issue.

@ Namence,

Welcome to the Forum.

Aren’t you putting the cart before the horse? Wouldn’t a prudent person have done some research and inquired about the 3550 and a Bytec external enclosure before making the purchase?

In your posting you imply that you are considering returning the 3550 and a Bytec external enclosure. What would be your reason for returning your newly purchased 3550 and a Bytec external enclosure to NewEgg other than Gee Wiz I should have done some research before I made my purchase?

Best Regards,
bjkg

Yes, it would have been ideal to look here before buying them. I read the newegg reviews and people said they have used this combo successfully, but I wanted to find specific information here.

The Bytecc enclosure isn't 100% compatible with DVD writers. I tried my 1640 and 3500 and had mixed results. I'm now using the enclosure for a spare hard drive.

first thing when you buy a new burner is flash it, might as well do it before you stick it in the case, do it on a real computer, then think slow, usb2 is good for 4x ,maybe 8x
if everything's optimal.
