Best enclosure for Pioneer 115D is best?

Hi,

I am going to buy a Pioneer 115D, and am looking for the best enclosure for it.

I have looked through the enclosure thread and two of the three options that I am looking at have not been mentioned/compared here.

I intend to use USB and will be using it to burn dual layer a lot.

The three that I am looking at are:

1) The one enclosure that I have seen mentioned in the threads is the Plumax PM-525U2-PCS
http://www.dealsonic.com/usb20enfor52.html

2) Also at Dealsonic I have noticed the StorTecc PM-525U2-ECS
http://www.dealsonic.com/stpmsismbaus1.html

I'm drawn to this one by the specs, but have not seen it mentioned here at all.

3) I *think* the Pioneer DVR-X152 is an external version of the 115D, but I haven't been able to confirm this or to tell what type of enclosure is used.

Which seems best?

Welcome to CDF.
I think the NEC chipset might serve you better.
See

Manufacturers site.

Hi All,
this is my first post and this way i like to say thanks for informations i got here.
Mainly read the posts, i have terrible english and gramar.

missyrelm,
i can confirm soulsurvivors post.
Two days ago obtained an enclosure like this plus a pioneer dvr-115d.
http://www.syba.com/Product/Info/Id/89
(in Europe frankly w/o any brand but nec chipset - it's like an aluminium brick)
chipset:
http://www.necel.com/usb/en/product/...133.html#block

The setup Works fine, burned and read several different type of media.
At the retail store, only the usb version was sold, but if You can, buy
the usb+firewire enclosure.
regards, gabe

Welcome to CDF gabe01.
Thanks for the confirmation.
I don't think the NEC chipset based caddies are available other than just USB.
At least not seen any so far.

yes, no firewire.
Difference only the audio plug, led indicators,
and the design.

Re: Best enclosure for Pioneer 115D is best?

Thanks for the help!

My wife and I have been trying to decide between the Syba that soulsurvior linked to:

Syba NEC Chipset Deluxe Screwless 5.25 Inch USB 2.0 External Enclosure
http://www.dealsonic.com/synecchdesc5.html

and the one mentioned by gabe01

SYBA SD-U2PLA-525 Rugged aluminum 5.25" USB2.0 B External Enclosure, NEC Chipset
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2bSD-U2PLA-525

Not sure if it makes a difference, NewEgg ratings are almost the same.

Both use the NEC chipset

The only other drive that we were looking at was the
Mapower KC51U2 Aluminum 5.25" USB 2.0 External Enclosure

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817145151

Simply because it has very high ratings on Newegg, but chipset isn't mentioned, but I'm pretty sure it's not NEC

We're leaning towards the aluminum Syba.

Re: Best enclosure for Pioneer 115D is best?

Sorry it took me a while to reply.

I *love* the SYBA SD-U2PLA-525 Rugged aluminum 5.25" USB2.0 B External Enclosure, NEC Chipset

It was screwless and a joy for a hardware scaredy-cat like me, the enclosure doesn't even come apart, you just slide the drive in pretty much.

All the burns I've made (admittedly not a lot yet) have been perfect!
I don't notice any noise either.

Thanks for the NEC chipset recommendation!

I believe this enclosure has the oxford chipset and I personally don't recommend the oxford 911 chipset.
although a lot of people will disagree with me but the initio in my opinion is more compatible with a wide variety of hardware configurations & i also like the nec chipste but am not sure if it comes in 1394

Re: Best enclosure for Pioneer 115D is best?

is the NEC the only chipset that will work? Or does it simply work the best? Sorry if it's a newbie question, I'm new to this whole thing...

I gotta tell you that I feeol like the fastest and most compatible 1394A external connection by far in my opinion is the Initio here are the enclosures that they are in

Hi Joe,

I know that AcomData and DuraMicro, Fantom Drives, SimpleTech all use our chipsets in their external cases. These are usually all at Frys and sometimes CompUSA.
The 1394 products are a couple of years old now, however it looks like the interest in 1394 is coming up again so you may see more of them in the stores.

Regards
Dan

this is from Initio tech support also confirming that the 4.73 firmware file that I have is the latest firmware for the Initio 1430L

Re: Best enclosure for Pioneer 115D is best?

As you can see in my signature my Pioneer 115D (that is now a 115L ) is in an Mapowe/Fantec H51 enclosure with internal power supply. At the moment the burner is in an USB only enclosure with GLE811 USB chipset. I know this may not be the best one but I did not have any problems burning DVDs and the burn results were also with no complains.

If I have time I could try a few other bridge board types. I have for my H51 enclosures 3 different combo bridgeboard types:
- Prolific PL3507C USB/FW
- GL811-04 (USB) and OX911 (FW)
- GL811-04 (USB) and OX911Plus (FW)

In the past I perfered the Prolific but since I had a few compatibility issues / strange behaviour with Plextor drives I'm not sure to recommend this chipset anymore. I guess there is no "perfect" chipset. That is the main problem with external enclosures I guess.

Since I'm not a person using the fastest possible burns speed supported by the selected DVD burner I do not have a lot problems with my external devices. Most burns are done with 8x or 16x.
