BenQ 1655 in Prolific Chipset Enclosure Cannot Rip DVD

I have the BenQ 1655 in a Plumax external enclosure with the Prolific chipset. This one here.

It's connected to my laptop computer via USB directly (no hub). (I don't have a 4-pin 6-pin FireWire cable.)

Everything works fine except ripping DVD-Video discs. Both Nero disc copy and DVD-Shrink say I/O Error. DVD-Decrypter (both ISO and File modes) only reads at 0.5x. When I put the same discs in my built-in CD-RW/DVD-ROM, the ripping works fine with all applications.

In fact, I just removed the drive from a Bytecc enclosure with the ALI chipset. It had no problem ripping. (But it couldn't run any Nero CDSpeed test).

I have attached some info on my setup. If it's not enough info, please let me know. Thanks.

You need to update the firmware on the enclosure.

Have a read of http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=158024.

Your burst rate is 18 so 12X is all you get. Maybe when external firmware comes out you might get higher burst rate to burn @ 16X. Is the drive set to master while in the enclosure?

Re: BenQ 1655 in Prolific Chipset Enclosure Cannot Rip DVD

Thanks! Firmware update to the enclosure did the trick. Ripping with DVD-Decrypter now hits 13x.

Yes, I have read on this forum beforehand that my setup was only going to hit 12x. But I wanted a good burner with LightScribe. I'm happy with 12x. Besides, it seems like many 16x-rated media burn best at 12x anyhow.

How do I go about setting the drive to master in the enclosure? What's the advantage?

I would also like to see a good "in depth" technical explanation about that...

Well, there is no real in depth Master evaluation. They just don't work if they are set to slave. They are at the end of the cable, so the pin on the back of the drive must correspond to the Master setting. As simple as that.

End of what cable? (Drive is in enclosure here.)

Sorry for off topic.

Yeah, you say so, but I haven't experiensed that. My NEC ND-3500 work perfectly when set to slave in enclosure. I'm asking once again; why?
